Title: Ancestry or FindMyPast
Post by: auntie bertie on Friday 19 December 14 12:23 GMT (UK)
I have been a global subscriber of Ancestry for years, and to be honest I didn't realise that FindMyPast existed (!).  I have found a few items on FindMyPast that are not on Ancestry and vice versa. Now it is time for annual subscription renewals.....which do you recommend selecting - I cannot afford both!?

I use both but I try not to pay full price.  There are good offers available from time to time.  Try the SANTA14 code on FindMyPast and see whether it offers you a half price subscription.

Hi Auntie,

There is also the genealogist http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk to consider too ;)

Hello RootsChatters,

We have found that both websites differ in what Records they have, which overlap slightly.

'Findmypast' is more reasonable and varied, in its pricing for access.  Including the £1 for one month offer, and the Half Price offers at the present.

With 'Ancestry', we have a Membership, but have not taken out a Subscription as yet (a bit Pricey).

We also keep a look out for the various 'Special Free Weekends', that both sites have from time-to-time.

Jeanette H.

A lot depends what records you are looking for as well - there have been a lot of threads on here about this topic. I like Ancestry as I find it very good for London records and have found several marriages on there which has saved me having to buy the certificates. I also like FindMyPast as I can often find things on there which are not on Ancestry. The Genealogist has good records as well - so really it's a case of deciding for yourself which one suits you and which you find easiest to use.

Check out your local library to see if they offer free in-house access to either or both.

:-\ I've been doing the family tree for a number of year's now, I've used Ancestry, FMPast and Genes Reunited, then I just used Ancestry, but then they are so expensive.
Because I've now got to the point where I now have a large tree and things have slowed down I don't feel I'm getting value for money, it's great to have all that information in front of you but if you no longer need it then why keep paying? A loyalty scheme would be nice.

The issue is all my trees are on Ancestry and they have told me that if I reduce from a Global to just a UK subscription that I will not be able to see the records/data etc behind my trees.  I think they have me over a barrel...... ::)

I agree that sometimes I feel that I have come to a natural conclusion to some of my research but then I think if they release new records I won't have access.   They are charging £179.99 for an annual whereas FindMyPast was more than half of that.

Ring ancestry and say you are a loyal customer but are considering cancelling at renewal unless they can offer you a new worldwide subscription at a cheaper price than £179-99.  Would be most surprised if they don't offer something cheaper.

That seems very strange as surely as long as you are a subscribing member to any part of their site you should be able to see your entire tree? Or do they mean that you would only be able to see the UK records and not anything from Australia for example?

When my subscription ran out I asked them what it meant for me, they said my tree would stay as it was, I can add stuff but not research.
I think they said they would reduce my fee from £117 to £95, I decided not to bother. :-\

From my own experience 5 months ago, it is possible to negotiate a larger discount than suggested above - I have a worldwide subscription at a cost of £119-00  ;D

There is an ancestry link for a 32% discount off 12 Months Wordlwide Membership at Ancestry.co.uk
If the full price is £179-99 then it would work out at £125-00   ;)

Or a premium membership at a 31% discount -i.e. 119.99 discounted to £82-79.  ;) Same link - second box along.

Or have you thought about purchasing Family Tree Maker Platinum 2014 - 6 months premium ancestry membership - some still available on links like this for £ 38-50

Thanks for that link - but when I clicked through it still showed the same price - £179.99 (Save £60)...or am I  being dense....?!

No, did the same when I looked out of curiosity.  I think the discounts relate to the full annual price compared how much it would cost paying monthly.  I've seen other so-called "discount" websites doing the same thing.  I guess if someone subscribes through the link, the site gets some commission ... or perhaps I'm just a bit cynical. ;D

Easiest way would be to ring them and then you will know for certain (the records will show you have been a global customer for years) ask if they can offer you a cheaper price because you've been a loyal customer.  Its an 0800 number, the phone call is free, surely worth a shot to see what they say  ???

if you've the time and inclination, check out your local library.

Many now offer free access in-house to both Ancestry Library Edition and FindMyPast

Hi
My suggestion is that you purchase family tree maker which gives you free access for a limited time. You then sync your tree to family tree maker, which means that all of your media saved on Ancestry is downloaded to your tree on family tree maker. Be warned this can take a long time. You then will have access to all of your media even when you are no longer a paying member. The thing to be aware of though is that it only downloads the first page of anything, so things like military records that cover several pages should be copied separately.
This is what I have done, they did extend my free access when family tree maker was updated, which was a bonus.
Hope this helps.
