Title: Date of picture?
Post by: historiankim on Monday 15 December 14 22:52 GMT (UK)
This photo is a little shy of a 4" x 6".  On the reverse it says "Mama 19 years old".  It was taken in Scotland probably in Aberdeenshire.  If anyone can help with dating the photo, I may be able to identify who's "mama" it is.  Thanks for your help in advance. : )
For some reason, it came up sideways--will try to correct this.  sorry...

See if this works.

My guess is late 1870s early 1880s.  But it is only a guess after looking at the relevant photos in the book about fashion.  Leaning more towards elary 1880s with all the 'tumbled curls on her head.    Wait for the gurus and see how close I am.

P.S. daters - I havent' cut off any relevant detail I don't think!  It wasn't sitting in a frame of it's own.  ;)

had a little play - you didn't ask for restoration - but you didn't ask for none either!   ;) ;)

Hope you don't mind!

different tone - closer to original.

Thank you, Wiggy for straightening that out!  Have no idea why the photo wouldn't be straight up "portrait".  I don't mind the touching up, either.  Anyway, my guess is it's one of 2 relatives born in 1867 (placing the photo at 1886) or possibly one born in 1850 (placing photo at 1869) although I think that's a stretch based on your estimate.

Wiggy,
Since you're fixing things up, um, do you mind looking at this photo as well?  Wondering if it's the same woman, much older?  Also, this one has some water damage.  I'd love your opinion on this.  Thanks!  :o

Hmmm - sorry - no idea  - might be I suppose - I'm not very good at seeing likemnesses.     :-[ ;)

And that is almost too damaged for one of my meagre abilities - will have a go . . . .

Someone else will no doubt give it a go though.

I'm with Wiggy on the date, late 1870s/early 1880s. She'd be a bit behind the fashion curve for it to be 1886, but it is definitely not 1869.

And it's a copy. The back is going to be a postcard, right? So it's a copy made from about 1900 onwards. Could we see the back please?

Keep in mind that friends exchanged photos as well as family, so this is not necessarily a relative. Just to confuse :P :)

Cheers,
China

I am working on the second photo and although I can't see likenesses, I don't think this can be the same woman - she reminds me of my Gran in the 1930s.   Would that make her just too old?      :-\ :-\

China thanks for seconding my thought - I feel better now!

so what about the second??

Here's my go at it.

Date for the second? Not much to see but I would think 1920s. The v-neck came out around 1914 so not before that. If it's a woman born in 1867 she'd be in her fifties, what do you think?

Thank you so much for the retouching and dating.  Here is the back of the first picture.  Not a "postcard" but it is on heavy paper.
So I've come to a few conclusions:  Probably NOT the same woman.  I know who #2 is and dates don't match up if years on #1 are correct.  Will have to go back to my tree to see who else it might be.
Thanks for all of your insights...so helpful!  This is my first time posting a picture so I appreciate your patience. : )

Hmmm...sure looks like a postcard from the front. Still, this style of photo didn't come out until about 1900 so the print is not contemporary with the subject. Possibly a memorial, made after the subject had passed away, which was a common practice.

Cheers,
China

Wow, so interesting!  Thanks so much China.  The photo is still in really good condition so that probably explains a lot.
Cheers,
