The above piece is made of none uk silver, about 3" in depth and hinged. My friend found it among her mothers possessions and is curious to know what it is and if it has a purpose. Her Mother came from a Russian Jewish family who arrived in the UK in about 1900. We have no idea if the piece is connected to her origins.
Would be grateful for any ideas.

Can you show the reverse? Has it had anything attached at the rear - that may mean it contained a relic or something. What, if any, marks are there on it? At first glance it looks like a Russian Orthodox cross on a straightforward chain. I do hope that you manage to find out about it.
