Hi, Can any one help please-
Trying to trace Luton Place, Manor Street, Clapham, London SW4. I think i now know that Manor Street became Clapham Manor Street but i cannot find any reference to Luton Place or Number 51.
Any one know the answer i would appreciate help. My family are listed at the address in 1852 but i dont know if they lived there or just owned the property.
Appreciate any help. Thanks Harryone

You say the family are listed there in 1852 - what are they listed in? Have you found them there in the 1851 census ? If so what are the piece and page number? What's the family name?

Hi Shaun J
Thanks for your message.
The information was in a letter i recd from Surrey History. They advised my family are shown in the 1852 Electoral Register, Burstow Parish, in Eastern District, polling District of Reigate in Burstow Court Lodge Farm but that his actual address was 51 Luton Place, Manor Street, Clapham.
So i assume he owned the House, possibly rented out?, but actually lived and worked Burstow.

It would help to know the name of your relative.
I can't find a record of a Luton Place in Clapham. There is a Langan Place in Manor Street in the 1851 census, where the occupants appear to be fairly wealthy (names Scott, Butler, Streatfield, Duprez).

There was an Acton Place in Manor Street - mentioned in the Old Bailey in 1851 as home of Temperance Caroline Baker

It would help to know the name of your relative.
There is a Joseph H Turner, Land And Ship Owner, Burstow Lodge in the 1851 Census, is this him?

The only Luton Place in the 1851 Census is in Greenwich.

Isaac was already 70 in 1851.
Could the Clapham address have been that of a grown up child he was living with?

There is a PCCwill for an Issac Sayers dying in 1857 in London Rd, Parsons Mead, Croydon.
A brief glance shows his wife is Elizabeth and he has 9 children Elizabeth Robert Mary William AnnJane Lucy Edward and Emma
Is that your guy by any chance?

The tithe apportionment index suggests he was a tenant at Burstow http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0011/177518/Surrey-Tithe-Records-Name-Index-P-Z.pdf

Hi ShaunJ, lizb & stanmapstone
Many thanks for your messages.
Yes Isaac Sayers was a tenant at Burstow.
Yes the Will for Isaac Sayers dying 1857 is the same Isaac Sayers of Burstow & Clapham.
It is highly possible that the Clapham address which he appears to have owned could have been for one of his Children as there also appears to have been a Trust set up after he died which refered to one of his daughters and her husband who had their own business.
Indeed the only Luton Place in the London County Council lists was in Greenwich and there does not appear to be any Luton Place in Manor Street when some names were abolished in 1858 or when Manor Street became Clapham Manor Street in 1938.
Not sure were to go now, definitely the Surrey History has it down as Luton Place, Manor Street, Clapham, just another mystery.
Thank you all for your help.
