Via the Grand Union and its tributaries, my line of Rudge boatsmen migrated from the West Bromwich/Birmingham area (late 1700s-1841 census) to Ashby-de-la-Zouch (1851 census), to Tring, Herts (1861 census) to the Greater London area by the 1881 census. It has made tracing the family tree and interesting adventure.

I'm trying to find a Matthew Ward (my 3x Great Grandfather) who I believe may have been on the canals - most likely in the Staffordshire and Lancashire areas. The only details I have for him is from his daughter's marriage certificate (Mary Matilda Lewis) which gives his occupation of "seaman" and that he was then deceased (July 1897). I initially took this to be that he was in the navy or something similar but being unable to find anything on that track, and with the traveller link to the family, I'm wondering if he was actually a boatman.
If anyone has any information that may help, I'd be so happy as I'm totally stuck on this line at the moment.

Thanks for the info. I got a little bit excited for a moment but as far as I can see that Matthew Ward was alive in 1901 ... back to the drawing board.

The 1851 census for the township of Rhysnant (Llandysilio - Four Crosses between Oswestry and Welshpool) shows a Roberts family (Thomas being a G,G,Grandfather):
William, 63, Head, Boatman;
Elizabeth Roberts, 58, wife;
Thomas Roberts, 22, Boatman;
Richard Roberts, 14, Boatman;
Joseph Judar[?], 8, Grandson,
Though I don't know anything about their life.

Hello Kerry and friends,
My people were canal boatmen and women too.
Ward, from Nuneaton - Staffs, Census has them in Wednesbury and Ellesmere Port Cheshire,
Cutler from Halesowen, Census has them as Boatmen starting in 1841, Halesowen, then throughout the various census -Shelton, Stoke (1871 -some Harrisons moored up too on this same census), Oldbury ,then later Birmingham.
Charles Cutler was married to a Lucy Smith ( I think but have not yet proven that Smith was her surname I am just going by other people's research) and I believe Smith was a canal boat family too. After Lucy died Charles Cutler married a Mary (Ann) Clegg but I don't think they had children together.
Kerry, we seem to have some names in common so let me know if you think there may be a connection. :)
Best regards
Dympna

I have ancestors who were canal folk ~ the Dallow's.
They eventually became land lubbers with my 3 x great grandfather becoming the lock keeper in Droitwich for several years prior to the family moving to Birmingham during the time when the canals were becoming out of favour with industries turning to use the railway which had been introduced to Droitwich.
