Title: Possible family connection in USA
Post by: Nickuebel on Tuesday 25 November 14 16:53 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I'm still a little new to all this so bare with me. During my research I discovered the Grandfather, Christian Friedrich Uebel travelled over to the USA. It would have been somewhere about 1890-1895?  He was a Pork Butcher by trade and family stories tell of him working for a time in Chicago which I believe was at that time the main meat distribution area for the United States. Via various sites I have found the family name ( Uebel) pops up in the surrounding area of Chicago and as yet been unable to find any means of finding addresses.
I was always under the impression that he went over there with a view to staying but decided to return to England. He eventually settled back in Kingston upon Hull on the North East Coast of England. I am intrigued as to why he returned, maybe he was just visiting relatives already there?
Any ideas or help would be most welcome.
Thank you,

Nick Uebel

There are some Uebels and other similar names in the 1892 Chicago city directory.  http://chicagoancestors.org/downloads/1892u.pdf

Christian's naturalization record from 1907 in England says he was born Brownsbach, Wurthemburg, Germany to Christian and Rosina Uebel.  Do you know what happened to them or if he had any siblings?  Looking for specific names of relatives might be easier than checking out every Uebel.

I see that Christian married in England in 1896.  Do you anything that puts Christian or his family in England prior to that?

I searched the Chicago City Directories from 1891-1900 and the only Uebel/Uebele in Chicago who was a "butcher" was the William that shows up in the above example.  He was there from about 1891-1893.

Kansas City also had major stockyards and meat packing plants.  There were no Uebels in the KC City Directories from 1890-1898.

Right folks this should put some more dates on this.

1891 UK census has him living in North Sheffield. Butcher, lodger with a James Haller, same age, occupation and both born Germany.

1897 JAS has UK birth record for his daughter Elsie R. L. Uebel in Hull area.

1901 UK Census has him living Holy Trinity, St Mary’s, Yorks (Hull area). Wife Sophie, daughter Elsie and 6 month son Ludwig. It looks like the 2 other children listed on his UK naturalisation (Hannah Sophia and Henry Carl have died).

So the US period must have been between 1891 and 1897.

So far can’t get anything definite for UK departure, US arrival or the return leg.

Thanks, Michael.  The marriage date of Jul./Aug./Sep. 1896 also narrows it down a bit further.

Dear Michael ONeil,

Thank you so much for this information.....fantastic! I was aware that my father had siblings that had died in infancy ( as did Ludwig later) but not that there was another sister, Hannah Sophia. When they were alive I had three Aunties, Elsie, Anne and Laura the youngest. I had. No knowledge of my Grandfather living in North Sheffield! But his co-lodger's name crops up in family stories. Thanks again
Best wishes,
Nick Uebel

Dear Genealiza,

Also my thanks for your help with my research. I have been trying to discover information about my family name for quite some time and it is only recently that I have had sufficient time (retirement) to properly address this research. Thank you so much,

Nick Uebel

Hello Michael ONeil,

Just had a thought regarding the son, Henry Carl whom you think may have died. My father's name as he was known was Charles Henry. Maybe his father, my grandfather Christian originaly called him Carl Henry? My father Charles was born in 1905 so that would tie in with his fathers naturalisation in 1907. All very intriguing.

Might Hannah and Anne be the same person as well?

Yes I suppose that could be true. Sorry if I seem a little slow but this detective work is a little new to me. Fascinating though,

Thanks,

Nick

You'll learn a lot by just doing it.  Those of us who have been doing it a long time are still learning, and it's always good to have multiple brains working on an answer.

Something more to throw into the pot.

Given that he must have gone to the States and then come back you’d expect to find some shipping manifests/entry forms for him in both countries and there’s a fairly narrow window to check. Can’t find anything concrete which is a surprise to me. Closest I can find so far is…

Mr F.C. Ebel, 7 August 1895. Arrived Southampton, embarked New York.
The manifest looks complicated and it’s difficult to tell what the ship is called SS Saale, Aller, Spave  or all three??? Either way the voyage looks to have originated in Shanghai and been destined for Bremen via NY and Southampton but it is a German ship.

Looked at the marriage details and it appears his wife was Sophie Koehnlein b1871-ish and from Rogenbach? Wuthernburg so the same region as Christian. Where they met is anyone’s guess - Hull? Can’t get anything on her in the UK prior to marriage.

I also had a look at the Chicago directories - no Christian during the period but a couple of entries for a William Uebel, Meatmarket, 144 Webster Av. Could be related - name and occupation? Looks like he ended up as a machinist in the later entries though.
