Title: School Admissions Hutt Valley and Oamaru.
Post by: jaybelnz on Monday 24 November 14 05:21 GMT (UK)
Hi. Please, does anyone have access to school records and admissions in the Hutt Valley? And possibly Oamaru.

My Dad, Robert Walter Mathews arrived in Wellington NZ with his parents in 1926. Aged about 10 years. Probably  Lower Hutt somewhere.

My Mum, Jessie McMillan Mason  McAughtrie and her sister Mary Houston McAughtrie arrived in Oamaru mid 1924 with their parents . My Mum was about 7 and Mary about 4.  School records for them might help me to establish when they came up to Wellington, to live in Moera, Lower Hutt. that's of course if they were in Oamaru long enough!  I just don't know that.

So Oamaru only for the McAughtries And Lower Hutt for both McAughtrie and Mathews please. Any assistance much appreciated.  Thanks heaps

Jeanne😃

Hi Jeanne

The Nth Otago Museum and Archives in Oamaru would be a good start.  Can also find them on Facebook.

Thank you Alex. Much appreciated.  One of my McAughtrie relatives was an Early Settler,  and I think that is the family they headed to when they came to NZ. I already have his details, but I might even find out more about him too.  Thanks very much!

Hello there
I am the archivist from Hutt Valley High School.  I have looked up our records and cannot find any of the family members you note.  Would you be able to provide the names of the parents as I may be able to help you in another way.

Apologies for the late reply Judith.  Thank you for responding.

My parents arrived in NZ from Scotland as young children in 1924 and 1926 respectively.  My father lived in Gracefield and my Mum in Moera.  My Dad was born in 1912 and my Mum 1916. And her younger sister  I think about 3 years later.  I was born and grew up in Moera too - so know the Hutt Valley well.

I know that my Mum attended Waiwhetu School, but I remember  also her saying something about Hutt Central and Petone Tech. so probably the same for her sister.  Pretty sure it wasn't HVHS,. But I never say never!  They may possibly have attended an Oamaru School before coming to Wellington, but that I just don't know.  I thought maybe if I could find an early local HV school enrolment, I might work out when they came up to Wellington.

So my Mum Jessie McMillan Mason McAughtrie and her sister Mary Houston  McAughtrie
Both daughters of Robert Houston McAughtrie and Elizabeth Boyd Walker McAughtrie
19 Randwick Cres. Moera.

My Dad Robert Walter Mathews, b 1912 in Scotland,  and his older sister Florence, both came to Wellington in 1926, both children of Robert Walter Mathews Snr and Jane Douglas. I only know of them living in Gracefield Road. I always thought that he had gone to Gracefield School, but I don't think that school opened until later years, but will have to check, might be a bit mixed up with someone else on that one.  And I don't remember him talking about a college. Then again, I'm just thinking maybe he went straight to Secondary, would have been 14 when he arrived mmmm.  Or even maybe not even that, might have gone straight to work!  Another mmm! His father was a gardener so he may well have helped him!  Oh golly, time I went to bed I think!

Not quite sure what you have in mind KiwiJude, but thanks for your interest. Much appreciated.

Jeanne  :)

Hi there from Wellington
I have looked through the Hutt Valley High School data base for admissions for first decade (1926 to 1935) and cannot find either of your parents.  If they had attended HVHS they would have fallen within this bracket.
I did however find through Ancestry a Robert and 'Lizzie' McAughtrie living at 68 Victoria Street, in Lower Hutt on the electoral roll in 1928.  Robert was described as a labourer and Lizzie - married.  They finish in 1972 for Robert and 1981 for Elizabeth (Lizzie).  I don't know if you run Ancestry, however if you would like their addresses I can transcribe them for you.  You mention 19 Randwick Crescent, Moera.  On the electoral roll it gives it as 91 Randwick Cres.
No problem if you would like this info.
Cheers and enjoy summer.

Just another thought
If they did continue their education it was probably though Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College.  Unfortunately we do not have the archives for this as they are at the Local City Council and are not available - I have tried once before for a query.
Cheers

Thank you Judith and Janette for all your input.  Interesting to see that electoral roll entry for the McAughtries.  I missed that Victoria Street one.  Explains my Memory of my Mum telling me she had been at Hutt Central School too, right on the corner if Victorua Street. She must have transferred to Waiwhetu School when the family moved over into the new State housing development in Moera, where the school was yet to be built.

I went into Ancestry today, after reading your messages and found that electoral roll info, so won't need that transcription thanks.  I do have a tree on there, so was able to add it straight in. And also did a few others while I was in there.

My 19 Randwick Cres address (instead of 91) was a typo transposition, so oops - my bad.

And the Stirling address on the Mathews Family Passénger List is great to have as well.  I always like to Google all these places, get a feel for it.  I have been to Scotland & England twice, and followed up on some of my ancestors  and family addresses and visited  graves, and visited Churches where they were married.  Just get a very special feeling!  And of course meeting other relatives has been pretty special too.

I also get a very special feeling when super people on this board, like you, help me out.  so thank you all again!
 :) :) :) Jeanne

No problem Jeanne. Glad to be of assistance.  This is why sites like RootsChat can be of assistance connecting people.  I too have just returned from Ireland and the UK making connections with my research.
Cheers
