Hi, Is there anyone able to do a census lookup please before the 1871 census.
If so I am trying to trace Henry Mountfield born abt 1840 in Stoke/Stoak, Cheshire.
I think he married a Eliza/Elizabeth Ann Unknown who was born about 1845 in Middlesex, they married around 1863. Their 1st child was born 1863 in Bunbury, Cheshire so they would have been living in this area around this time, their 2nd child was born abt 1868 in Birkenhead.
I have him on the 1871,1881,1891 &1901 census living in Birkenhead, but I can't find him before that.
Thanks in advance
Lizzieloop ooops I think I have put this in the wrong place - can it be moved???

Hi Lizzie
I have had a good look around the earlier census years and there is no sign of him or his birth or his marriage.
There are not that many families of Mountfield in Cheshire, but there were two in Stoke by Acton 1841 they seem to be father (John 60 farmer) and nextdoor son (William farmers son 24 married to Mary ) they are there in 1851 also.
In the 1881 census of Birkenhead there is a nephew James Vickers Mountfield (21) living with your Henry, in the http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/ website there is a birth for James (Bunbury 1861) there is also a marriage indexed for a William Mountfield and Eliza Vickers (Bunbury 1860).
If the William father of James is the brother of Henry then there is a good chance of them having the same father, I would suggest you purchase this wedding certificate and then you should find the father and we can have another look with the fathers imformation.
good luck

I think I may have found the birth for John Mountfield - the one I have is, he was christened 4 Jan 1783 Whitegate, Cheshire which, I believe is in the right area.
His parents are listed as Richard Mountfield and Ellen.
The info you gave me re John on the 1841 census - did he have a wife? as I have found a marriage for a John Mountfield to a Hannah Betteley 1801 Middlewich, Cheshire.
Thanks again :D

Hi
Here is the census details for the 1841, can I suggest though that you do not assume they are connected in any way to your Henry and William until you can confirm their fathers name.
HO107-116-16-Page 19 Stoke by Acton Cheshire
John Mountfield 60 born in county
Hannah 55
Elizabeth 20

Thanks Peter I won't.
Can you tell me the age of Mary Mountfield off the 1841 and where she was from.
I have found this marriage which may be a possibility.
William Mountfield married Mary Cornes 6 Feb 1835 Acton by Nantwich, Cheshire
A big thanks

Just to say thanks Peter as some pieces of the puzzle are falling into place;
It appears that Henry Mountfield & William are brothers because, William married Eliza Vickers - Eliza Vickers had a sister Louise who was visiting Henry and also James Vickers Mountfield was listed as Henry.s nephew. And of course James Vickers Mountfield's parents were listed as William & Eliza.
Just need to find William & Henry's parents now.
Thanks for your help

Hi Again
John Mountfield in 1851 was a widow living on his own and died in 1858, if you go to this link and search for you will find he left a will which might be worth you spending £3.50 on.

Thanks Peter but I know mine died 1939. He was my great grandfather and sadly buried most of his sons and a daughter. He was a Detective Sergeant in the police - pity I haven't his knack. :D
His father is the Henry 1841 I am trying to trace back from.
Thanks again
