Hi everybody,Ive just joined up and I need some help,I have managed to trace back to George
Vacher(1630-1668) now I know his father was John (possibly George John born 1605 ) everybody
else's tree says he married Dorothy White ( Weyitt ) possibly about 1628. Has anybody actually
seen this in a parish record? if so where and when? The same question for Johns birth,I know
Dorothy was born in Hazelbury Bryan in Dorset in 1605
There are also references to Johns father being either George or Thomas or even both!
COME ON NOW FELLOW VACHERS WE CAN DO THIS
REGARDS

OK Chris and welcome to Rootschat
have a look at these
burial 7th jan 1668 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJDH-STSK
a marriage - same village - but not to Dorothy White it's to Elizabeth Painter and his father is John Vacher https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJDH-SY6R
burial of a son John Vacher https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJDC-JH99
christening of a child https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJDH-SD6T
any thoughts on Elizabeth being his wife and not Dorothy ?
added
this looks like the father John Vacher death in 1661
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJDH-SD66
if Elizabeth Painter was his wife - another record gives her father as Thomas Painter at the marriage

1642 - 1651 was the English Civil War - George would have been 21 when it finished ,so I presume he would have been in the war ...
quote
Although they came from all the surrounding counties the Clubmen were particularly strong in Dorset and after having been harried by Oliver Cromwell some 2-4000 of them became entrenched on Hambledon Hill in August 1645. It was here that they made their last stand led by the Rev. Bravel of Compton Abbas. Against them was Cromwells army of about 1000 men, fresh from the siege of Sherborne Castle and which had earlier surrounded the town of Shaftesbury and capture about 50 of the clubmens leaders who were holding a meeting there. Cromwell attacked from the rear and the clubmen were routed. Most fled, and some it is said, escaped by sliding down the hill on their bottoms, amongst them 4 clergy.
I wonder if a 15 yr old George Vacher was one of them because Milton Abbas is only 6 miles from Hambledon Hill ?

Hi Chris,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
On my wife's side of the family we have a Fanny Elisabeth Vatcher BENSON, from Dorset.
Topic: 1841 / 1851 or PR: BENSON & VATCHER / VACHER
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=39491.0
We've speculated about there being a VACHER / VATCHER connection there but we haven't found it yet :(
I was contacted by another (RootsChat) Vacher researcher, DebPat.
She's doing a One-Name-Study for VACHER / VACHRE / VATCHER
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=26487.0
It's probably worth contacting her. I've sent her a PM with a link to this topic.
regards,
Bob

Hi Chris, hows it going?
Everybody elses tree is wrong. lol
We know from George's marriage to Elizabeth Painter (5 Jul 1655) and the 1st banns of the same (10 Jun 1655) that George's father was John Vacher.
John their first son is baptised 16 Jun 1556 Milton Abbas but he dies aged 7.5 months old and is buried 4 Feb 1656 (OC (Julian) which would be 4 Feb 1657 as the year changed in March after the Gregorian New year in Jan)
The reason i believe folks are getting mixed up and believe John married a Dorothy Whyte is due to a mistranslation on the Dorset OPC site of the below.

last attachment where the info seems mixed up.
and this the copy past from the Dorset Opc.
Thomas WELLS son of John Vacher & Dorothy (of Wareham) WEYITT daughter of John Weyitt of Mordon married 01-Jul 1655
George VACHER of Milton Abbey clarke & Elizabeth PAINTER d.of Thomas Painter of Portland married 05-Jul 1655

[Hi Garstonite,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly,
The burial on 7-1-1668 was Georges and his wife was Elizabeth painter ( of Portland)
their first child was John but he died after 7 months.
they had 7 kids in all (let me know if you want the details)
I agree this death in 1661 could easily be George's dad John.
But who was George's mum? Dorothy ?
As for Hambledon Hill , if he was there he must have kept his head down or legged it because he
lasted another 23 years!
regards Chris

Hi Jim,
thanks for the reply, did you know George's last 3 sons had 30 kids between them! (no telly in them days !) George and Elizabeth had 7 kids in all your 6, plus George born 1659.
regards Chris

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the reply,I think there probably is a link between Vatcher and Vacher somewhere,I often get called Vatcher even now after 400years!
Thanks for mentioning Debpat I speak to her often.

Hello,
I've been putting together my family tree on Ancestry, which is the "Vater" iteration of the Vatcher name and settled in Newfoundland around 1800.
I am also at the same empass as noted earlier; George / John Vacher in Milton Abbas.
From what I've been able to put together; George Vacher b. 1605 appears to have gone by "John". I think it far more likely that he married Dorothy White (which I found a record of a baptism for her in Hazelbury Bryan, dated 16 Mar 1605 or 1606).
I'm struggling with George "the elder" b.1580. Ancestry connects him to Elizabeth Painter with a marriage date of 1655 - which makes no sense.
There is definitely some confusion here and certainly with the circumstances at the time, it's no surprise. Along with a supreme lack of original names for their children!
Hopefully one day someone will figure it out and post it here!
Thanks
Mo
