Title: Death in South Africa
Post by: oharaedith on Tuesday 18 November 14 03:25 GMT (UK)
How can I find a death for Mrs. Kathleen Owen, I think she died between 1903 and 1906.

South Africa is a huge place  :)

Some more information would really help:
Do you have any idea where she might have lived?
Did she have any other Christian names?
The other thing that would help is the name of her husband.  Possibly, if he died here, there would be an estate file for him.

She was born in Ireland in 1866. Her maiden name was Kathleen Watson.   I just found her going to South Africa in 1903 with her husband William Edward Owen and children . I see her husband and children came back in 1906, but could not see her on the passenger list. He remarried in 1907 in Dublin, and he died in 1909.

I just found her going to South Africa in 1903 with her husband William Edward Owen and children.

If you could tell us the ship, port and arrival date it could help focus the search.  Also, if any of the children's ages suggest they were born in South Africa this would narrow down the time frame.

All the best
Philip

Kathleen , her husband William Edward  and 3 children   Violet Olga, Edith Florence and Albert Henry Charles. left to go to Cape Town 9 Sept 1903 from London England, ship name Ruapehu.
Violet and Edith returned to port in Southampton on 16 July 1906 ship name Darmstadt.
William and Albert returned same day and same port, but on ship Gaika .
I only found out this information last week on Find my past ( it was free ).
As could not see Kathleen on return , I was wondering if she had died there . I could never find a death for her in Ireland.

Many thanks for the details.
According to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~shipstonz/PassLists/ruapehu1903.html the Ruapehu left Plymouth on 12 September 1903, stopped briefly at Tenerife on 17th September, arrived in Cape Town on 3rd October, then continued to Hobart (Tasmania) on 23rd October ending the voyage in Wellington (New Zealand) on 28 October 1903.

The Ruahepu belonged to the New Zealand Shipping Company, so if Kathleen Owen died before reaching Cape Town her death would, I presume, have been recorded under whatever regulations there were for New Zealand registrations.

Thank you for the information, I will have to wait till maybe the new year, to go check on the return passage to try and get  names of  all the passengers , as when I looked at the pages their names were on, I could not go to the pages before or after. It will keep me busy in the New Year P.G.
