Title: Rabbi moses in Sydney
Post by: pwh on Sunday 16 November 14 01:38 GMT (UK)
I am  beginning  the  task  of putting  my extensive  research  into  the  Rintel  branch  of my
Hart family  into  manuscript  form.  To that end  I am trying to  discover  details of his life  in
Sydney  between  1844 and 1849.  This is what I  know already.
He arrived on the  Lloyds on  14/7/1844  from  London. He had been a reader at  the  Brighton
UK  synagogue,  and he  established the first  Jewish  school  in  Australia.  By  May of  1848
he was  a member of  the Grand Lodge  of the Independent  Order of Oddfellows.  He was
appointed  as the  Jewish  minister  in  Melbourne  on 29/1/1849.  It is  quite  remarkable
that  he did all  this by the age  of 26.  So if anyone can  fill in some of the gaps   it  would
be most  appreciated.  I would  be particularly  interested  in any  connection  to  the  York
St Synagogue  that opened  three months before  his arrival  in  Sydney.

                                                                                                               Thanks
                                                                                                                                PWH

As you already have several threads for the RINTEL & HART families I suggest you link them to this thread to save people duplicating information.

He is a very interesting man.  I have found references to him relating to the Levy, Pirani and Marks families in Melbourne.  The CDV of him in colour is a very good image.

Yes he he certainly was  a major  figure in  Australian Jewish  history.  You  mentioned
links to  the Levy, Pirani, and  Marks families  in  Melbourne.  The Levy connection  would  not
surprise  me as  His  wife Elvina Hart  was connected  through her mother  to the  Levy  family
in New York , where Elvina was born.  Marks is an old Jewish name  but where  does  Pirani
come In?  I have never heard of them.  Can you enlighten  me ?
                                                                                           Thanks
                                                                                                           Pwh

Henry Cohen Pirani was the son of Benetto Cohen/Cohen Pirani and Reyna Abecassis.  He arrived in Melbourne in the mid 1850's and was a merchant.  He married Louisa Levy in Melbourne.  His brother in law was Hyam Marks (Louisa's sister).  His brother was James Cohen Pirani who married Abigail Davies.

H C Pirani was one of those responsible for establishing the Jewish School in Melbourne; supported the Sephardic Congregation and was a member of Lodge Felix.

He migrated to New Zealand with his family in the 1860's

Rabbi Moses RINTEL has a posthumous entry in the 1881 Cyclopaedia of Australasia.

ADD, (possibly duplicating this information, but for ease, here's some biographical material)

The name Pirani comes from the town of Piran in Slovenia

He arrived on the  Lloyds on  14/7/1844  from  London.

Without going back over the many threads, may I mention that the passengers on the LLOYDS,  from London 15 March and Portsmouth 28 March 1844 include a Mr and Mrs Hart as well as a Mr Rintel.

No initials for either the HART or RINTEL passengers, so you would already have additional sources to confirm that the Mr Rintel listed in the following cutting was actually noted as Rabbi Moses RINTEL.

Your post  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=563258.0 reply 10 suggests you are relying on the cutting I have linked above to establish his Sydney arrival.   ???

Cheers,  JM

Majm
Your point  about whether  the  Mr Rintel  who  arrived on the Lloyds  in  1844 in  Sydney
is Rabbi Moses  Rintel  is  a valid one.  But I think  on the  balance  of  what I  know
I am  correct  in assuming  that  they are one and the  same.
I will  explain  why  I think so.  I have a copy of the  obituary  of him  in  the  Star
of Melbourne  of  31/5/1880  .It says that he  arrived  in  Sydney  in 1844.
While it not an official document  I would  ask the   question    why would  anyone
want to make up a story  about  such a prominent  and well respected  figure.
I have  looked up  websites  of  Australian  Jewish  organizations  such as the  Board
of Jewish  Education  in  Sydney.  They tell the same story.  So I think I am on fairly
solid  ground  here.  The fact  there was a Mr and Mrs  Hart  I find interesting.  This is
This is one of those times I wish the captain of  the ship  had given us a  little  more
             information.
                                                                                           regards
                                                                                                      Pwh

I have not gone back over the many threads re Rabbi Moses RINTEL, so I may be duplicating information previously given.

The above links are for the National Library of Australia's online newspapers project that predates TROVE newspapers .... The Ferguson project particularly covers the 1840's.

I think that you will now need to contact our Global Moderator to seek to have your thread topic changed to better reflect the person and the location and the timeframe that this particular thread is addressing. (I think the first 24 hours after a post is made allows the poster time to adjust for oversights in a post).     It may help you to advance this specific quest about the Rabbi.   You can simply use the "Report to Moderator" button to make contact.

Peter, perhaps you could modify your topic heading to read Rabbi Moses RINTEL in Sydney 1844-1849.

Hello,
My family Israel Glance and wife Rebecca (nee Abecassis) emigrated from Leeds to Melbourne in the 1860s. Rebecca was the daughter of Jacob Abecassis born in Mogador, (Essouirra) Morocco. His wife was Elizabeth Levi born in Hamburg. I am wondering if Henry Cohen Pirani who was the son of Benetto Cohen/Cohen Pirani and Reyna Abecassis was related to my ggrandmother Rebecca Glance (nee Abecassis) from London / Morocco ? With thanks for any information you can provide, Tim McCabe, Perth, Western Australia
