With very limited information I am looking to see if joseph samuel smith born horsham sussex 1903 son of edward smith matches with tree. Does joseph stay in horsham or move to surrey borders. Any ideas. Many thanks
-
Are you sure of that birthplace and date - cannot see one on free bmd?
-
There is this birth:
Births Mar 1903
Giacomelli Joseph Samuel Horsham 2b 311
If you got your information from the 1911 census, is there any remote possibilty that this is the correct person?
-
1911 census shows joseph samuel smith b 1903, looking to see where he was in later years
-
I appreciate that he is shown in the 1911 census, but there is not an apparent birth for him, so what else do you know about him?
(There is not a matching death for him, either)
-
The family that appears as Smith in 1911 and 1901 census, use the surname Giacomelli in 1891.
-
This looks like Edward and Eliza Jane's marriage:
Marriages Jun 1879
xxxx COLLINGS Eliza Jane Brighton
xxxxx GIACOMELLI Edward Brighton
MARKWICK Robert Brighton
Wintchester Annie Brighton
-
Joseph Samuel Giacomelli marries in Horsham in 1927, and dies in Crawley in 1994.

Didvyou notice name of wife

Daisy M South. (It is showing on free bmd)
Several children showing on free bmd.

Interesting reading about smith/giacomelli surname, my grandad was born James giacomelli in 1879 Brighton, the family then seemed to change the name to smith, on his marriage certificate it is James giacomelli-smith, have never managed to get to the bottom of the name change

Welcome to the boards, Jackie
Hope derbs returns to the boards to discuss any connections.
Did your grandfather never discuss the name change?

Thanks, the family story is that my grandfathers dad died and his mother remarried so he ran away to the army and changed his name to smith but when I have researched it would appear that the family were giacomelli then in 1881 they are smith then 1891 back to giacomelli! Very confusing and on his marriage certificate it is giacomelli-smith but his dad is written as William smith, not sure I will ever get to the bottom of it but will keep trying!
