Would anyone be able to help me find what happened to Clara Wallace, born at Greyfield, Clutton in 1853. She was christened on 2nd November 1855 at ? Church, Clutton.
Her parents were John and Elizabeth Wallace from Warwick. Previous posting Topic: The Wallis or Wallace family of Bishops Tachbrook, Warwickshire
In 1871 census Clara Wallace (spelt Wallice) was listed as living in Holt, Bradford upon Avon, Wiltshire. An employee and living with the Eyres family. Clara then goes off the radar.
No marriage that seems to fit or death, although I did find a Clara Wallace, aged 28, who died in an asylum in West Yorkshire in 1882.
No other Clara Wallaces in Censes after 1871 with a place of birth listed as Greyfield/Clutton/High Littleton.
Her mother, sisters and brother were all in London around 1871 and later.
Thanks
Rosie

She really goes off the radar doesn't she :(
Perhaps we could find the Clara that died in 1882 on the 1881 census? Just to see where she came from in case she is yours. Unlikely but you never know.
Can't see a birth in Yorkshire for a Clara around 1854 but she may have been married or born elsewhere I suppose.
-
I can't see a Clara Wallace born Yorks. either.
I did find a Clara Wallis b.C.1854 in service in London in 1871 but that was also listed as her birthplace.

Hi,
I wonder if this is the Clara WALLACE that died in 1882, here in the census of 1881,
1881 RG11/4575 f.159 p.13 Stanley cum Wrenthorpe, Wakefield
"West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum"
C W Patient Unm Female 27 None Not Known Imbecile
Unfortunately as there is no POB then it doesn't make it any easier to know if it's your Clara.
Regards,
Daisy

I reluctantly think this may be my Clara and feel very sad if it is. Why would she be so far away from her family? Her mother and most of her sisters were in London. Her father was in Somerset and Gloucestershire. I'll never know, but will keep looking in the hope I do find her married and things are ok.
Clara's brother also goes off the radar. His name is Herbert Wallace born 1855 in Greyfield, Clutton. I've got him in the 1871 census in London, but not found after this.
Thanks for your interest.

http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk
has a 1875 hit for a Clara Wallace, article title is "A Dishonest Domestic" (oh dear), involved the Bristol Police Court so might fit in terms of area.
-
Any chance she was in prison in 1881?
(I don't have access to the newspaper report)

Neither do I have access to newspaper archives. I'll search on Ancestry and see if anything comes up.
Thanks

Hi, Rosie, the article is as follows 1875 Bristol Police Court. Reported in the Western Daily Press 18th February 1875
A Dishonest Domestic
Clara Wallace whose friends don't know her exact age charged with stealing some articles of Jewellery value 4s 6d, the property of Fanny Vicarage of Park Street, which were found to be pawned by her at Mr Olive's Redcliff. Sentenced to 3 months hard labour.
Good Luck with your searches

Hi, Rosie, a further mention of a Clara Wallis this time. From the Leamington Spa Courier, 18th August 1889.
In summary the article concerns the theft of a coat, the property of Mr William Moore, Knightcote house, Milverton. A man was charged and convicted of the offence. The report quotes a Clara Wallis housemaid in this residence as saying she had last seen the coat when she had put it into a room in the house. There does not appear to be any implication that this Clara was in any way involved.
If she is yours this gives you an indication of her whereabouts in 1889.

I think this is the Clara WALLIS mentioned in the article above,
1891 RG12/2473 f.101 p.53 Milverton, Town: Leamington, Warwickshire
5 Warwick New Road
Clara WALLIS Serv S 25 Parlourmaid Dmestic Bucks Sherthington
Living in the household of Mr William MOORE.
So it doesn't look like she is your Clara.

I wonder if this Clara could have gone to Bristol in the middle of her stay and commited the theft?

For those who may be interested in what I found out at my recent visit to Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Clara was transferred to West Riding Asylum from Wiltshire County Asylum. Her father was the Porter at the Melksham Workhouse and reported to the guardians that his daughter was unwell. She was admitted to Calne Workhouse, which was part of the union, and then transferred to Wiltshire County Asylum. She was having religious excitement with mania, a heart problem and was emaciated. After two years she was transferred to West Riding. She died there in 1882 and was buried at in the parish of Stanley.
It all ties up now and it's very sad. I need to access Wakefield to find out more information on her time there. She may have died because of her heart disease rather than mental deterioration.
Thanks

Clara mentioned earlier was "re-admitted" to the W York Asylum 8th April 1876 and died there 16th June 1882
The National Archives has worked with Ancestry to digitise and transcribe the Lunatic Patient Admission Registers.

I've recently discovered a relative in the asylum at Colney Hatch, from 1851-1864.
I looked at the deposited registers at the LMA, it makes harrowing reading.
From what I gather, the patients weren't treated neither were they ill-treated.
Although she was admitted with 'Dementia' she died of TB.

Hi,
Thank you for letting us know what you found. It's good to know that you found your Clara even though it is such a sad story.
