Hi,
Looking for the death of Robert MacDonald born 4 June 1837 Aghalee Antrim. Robert married Elizabeth Rea 10 February 1858 at Lurgan Registry. Lurgan. Northern Ireland. The couple had at least 11 children, the last one Samuel MacDonald was born 21 June 1881 in Aghalee. Antrim and his mother Elizabeth died 11 July 1881 in Aghalee. Antrim.
The name Deerpack or is it Deer Park crops up - which could be the area they lived in ???
There are references to the family on pedigree files family search but really it is the death of Robert Macdonald that I am trying to trace.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You.
Sandra ;D

The Deer Park was the grounds of Antrim Castle, along with Deer park bridge http://www.downmemorylane.me.uk/Antrim%20D1.htm

There is also a Deer Park townland in the parish of Glenavy, Poor Law Union, Lurgan. See:

Thank You.
This makes a little more sense to me now- although the birth date varies slightly there is a record under UK, Royal Naval Reserve Service Records Index, 1860-1955 for the son Samuel MacDonald which gave his birth place as Glenoay, (must be transcription error) County Antrim.

Can anyone see anything relating to the death of Robert MacDonald born 4 June 1837 Aghalee.
Elizabeth has died shortly after giving birth to the last son Samuel. Presuming Robert stayed in the area ???

Same place Antrim Castle was built by Lord Conway around 1664 and of which very little trace now remains lay in the townland of Portmore and in Aghagallon parish. On the other side of Lough Beg was the deer-park which as late as 1770 was stored with deers, hares, rabbits, pheasants, etc.

Is it possible to find anything on the death of Robert Macdonald do you think ???
Sandra

If his death was registered in Northern Ireland then you should be able to find it here:
https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/
I have had a quick look between 1880 and 1910. There are plenty of Robert McDonalds but none that seem like the correct one. You may be familiar with the site, but if not, you need to buy some credits before being able to search, after which searches giving some information are free but full records cost 5 credits (£2). You can search only in 5 year chunks and the site does not allow for variant spellings.
For the record Deer Park in Glenavy parish is distinct from the one at Antrim Castle.

Many thanks - Seems like a common surname and unfortunately I don't think there is a middle name for Robert which might have helped. Just touching the surface with the children, some moved to England and then onto Australia and Canada but some may have stayed in Ireland. The last born son Samuel went back to Ireland and was married at Christchurch Belfast 14 August 1911 and the first daughter of the couple born 12 May 1912 at 94 Coolbeg Street. Belfast. Made me think there were still family ties although I can't see them on census for 1901 or 1911. ???

As you are no doubt aware, it is sometimes possible to trace people's movements through the Valuation Revision Books on PRONI:
http://applications.proni.gov.uk/dcal_proni_val12b/Search.aspx
I had a look at Deer Park townland but cannot see Robert. There are references to Anna and William B MacDonald. This is probably William Beatty MacDonald and reference to his will can also be found on PRONI's site.
If any of the documents around 1881 gave a townland name for the location, it would be perhaps possible to find Robert and see when/if he was deleted from that townland.
-
Not sure William B and Anna would belong to this Macdonald clan. We seem to have a Joseph Beatty Macdonald 1878 Belfast Antrim (died 1914 Queensland Australia) and a William Robert Macdonald 10 April 1879 Antrim died 3 July 1931 York Ontario.

Still haven't found a death registration for Robert McDonald yet (spelling of surname could be the problem) but there's a Robert McDonald listed under Deerpark in 1876-
http://www.glenavyhistory.com/glenavy_parishChurch.php
This member also seems to be interested in McDonald, Glenavy- even though they haven't logged in for a few years it might be worth sending a PM to see if they have any information on your family:

While searching for Robert McDonald I have found quite a bit in Irish records for some of his children (Susan's story is quite sad)- would you like me to post more?

Hi,
Any information would be valued and greatly appreciated - vague suggestion that Susan married someone with the surname "Brown" ???
Thank You

Hi,
Absolutely terrific - thank you so very very much ;D
Apart from a few odd surnames for the females which were really rather vague, had nothing at all on them. So I am over whelmed by what you have come up with. Knew that James, and Joseph MacDonald went to Australia, William Robert to Canada and suspect Robert was in Barrow-in-Furness.
Not sure what happened to father Robert, presumed he stayed in Aghalee ??? Knew the youngest son Samuel was brought up by relatives (although who - remains a mystery ???) He seemed to go to and from between Ireland and the UK 1910 ish but never ever found anything on census for him. (His service with UK - Royal Navy seems to start in 1914) Rumour was that he spent sometime in Australia but James and Joseph did not go to Australia until 1905/6 so haven't proved or disproved that. There was a gap between 1912 and 1920 between the birth of children so apart from his Navy Service or during it, he could have wandered any where ???
Many, many thanks - really appreciated.
Regards
Sandra ;D

Hi,
In reply 14 you said " (Susan's story is quite sad) - note that she died 1892 aged 23 years and daughter Isabella died as infant. Did the quote refer to the young age at which she died and also daughter Isabella or circumstances ?
Noticed that sister Sarah Elizabeth MacDonald/Tosh also died when she was 23 years :'(
There was another sister Jane MacDonald born 12 Sept 1858 in Aghalee. Antrim. Vague information suggests she could have married a McClusky (no doubt that surname varies as well ??? but so far I haven't come across anything for Jane.

Looking at the dates for Susan's family is what I based my remark on-
1891 (1 Dec.) Susan McDonald married William Brown
1890 (11 Dec.) daughter Isabella born
1891 (16 Jan.) daughter Isabella died
1892 (14 Sept.) daughter Susan born
1892 (16 Sept.) Susan died age 23
1910 (15 May) William Brown died- possibly tuberculosis
Will have a look for sister Jane McDonald :)
-
Thank you. Thought that's what you meant.

There were no sources for this info which I must have come across and noted in 2007. There was a daughter Mary Ann Macdonald baptised 22 April 1860 who may have married Thomas Andrew Walker (1856 - 1830) .The couple could have emigrated to New Zealand in 1929 - that is also unsubstantiated at the moment ???
Would appreciate any info found on this couple.
Thank You

Another one seems to be Majestic Street Belfast - some of the male names would be the same as her brothers -IF it was Mary ? Elder son born in the USA and the others County Antrim. ???
