Title: looking for Sister and family of Francis Smith (1907, leeds W.Yorkshire)
Post by: Marmitch on Tuesday 04 November 14 12:59 GMT (UK)
I am looking for the family of Eileen Mary Smith born Leeds 1909. Her brother Francis died in WW2, and his family subsequently lost touch with the Smith side of the family. I am not sure if she married and had children, and if so what became of them.
Their father James William Smith(born 1880) married Margaret Ann Hughes in 1906 (leeds). I have found him in the 1881 census, but he (along with his father James) disappears from the records until 1906 (marriage). Has anyone any suggestions as to why this may be the case. his mother (Mary) and his siblings are still listed in the 1891 census. I would be interested if anyone has any information on these individuals (Thomas 1873/4, Esther 1876 and Peter Smith 1879)
Many thanks
MM

Perhaps someone could check if she is the one going to New York and crossing the boarder from Canada.

Thankyou for the information Suzard. It has opened up a new line of research.
Thakyou also Jennifer. if this is the same Eileen, it explains why there are seemingly no family members left in Leeds.

The Eileen Mary Smith, who is sailing to New York in 1936, was acrually from Colne in Lancashire, and is sailing with her entire family, I am afraid.

Me Again

I am sure that you have Esther's death. She was buried at Killingbeck Catholic cemetery in Grave 2436

Peter did marry, Annie Eliza Drake, they had one son, Leonard in 1900, If I am correct, Peter died in 1925, age 46. He was also buried at Killingbeck , Grave 18811.

Thank you all for your replies.

JeannieR: I was just in the process of checking your info regarding Eileen's whereabouts in 1937, and it would appear to fit the facts regarding possible location. I assume when you say parent's your source also lists them as being alive in 1937. I only ask because I have found a possible death for her father James William in Sept qtr of 1937 (aged 57).
Regarding your latest info, yes I believe that you have the right Peter Smith, and will try to trace his children.

MaryP: I don't as yet have her exact birth date. The one you gave is possible. The birth I know was registered 2nd qtr 1909. 31 March being 1 day short of the start of this qtr, would make it highly likely that the birth would appear in this qtrs records. Thank you. If the death record tallies, then :
a. She didn't marry, and b. There is a strong possibility of no children.

Goughy: Thanks for your reply. I was getting my Esthers and Eileens mixed up for a minute. Yes I think you are right. This is The Esther who is the sister of Peter and James William. Coupled with the grave details from JeannieR, it is helping to narrow the search.

Peter had the middle name Joseph?

He had 2 children but one died - there is a son Leonard (who lived) age 5 in 1911 - but there is also a tree on A*****y which has Leonard as b. 1900 ? He is not with his parents in 1901 ??????

Thanks Suzard. It's possible that 1900 is a 'rough' estimate of birth. There seem to be a lot of Leonard Smiths born in yorkshire around the turn of the century. I did find a tree (on a website that is no longer available!) that listed peter smith married to Annie Drake, and with Leonard as the son, but at the time I wasn't sure if this was the right family. From the scant info I did make a note of, Leonard appeared to marry. There was a possibility of 2 children (boys) I think.

Hello Again.

Leonard Smith, married Edna May Schofield at St Annes Cathedral, Leeds. The marriage was registered in the September qtr of 1934

There were birth registrations for two possible sons (mothers maiden name Schofield ) in the March qtr 1935 and the September qtr of 1938. You can check this on the Freebmd website, to get their names.

The information I gave you yesterday, re Eileen still being at home in 1937, came from a Register of Electors CD for that year.

Update on Eileen.
Apparently she did marry. Her husband was Albert S Tomlinson, who she married in 1939. Can anyone find out if they had children, and if so what were/are their names?
Other info gleaned. She died fairly recently (not sure where). She was in her 90s.

I thought that the later the timeline, the easier it would be to find relatives, but in fact the opposite is true. Because of the lack of census material, there are a lot of possible relatives, but no way of tieing them to a family group. I can see a lot of blind alleys coming up. How would you check family groupings say for the 1950 s to 1990s ?
Apart from that, I am making great progress with the tree thanks to rootschatters  ;D

Hi

I think that you may have to send for the, birth certificate, of the oldest child. to check if you have the correct parents, this should give you an address. then check the Electoral Registers for them, other that that, you could put your story in one of the local papers, to if anything come of that.

Also check to see if any of the children, married and had children, if they did there is always Facebook to check.

Hello....

Eileen Mary died in 2003, registered at Worthing, Sussex. Her birthday was May 4th 1909

I have her on the 2002 Electoral Rolls, living with her married daughter, born 1943, her son in law, and three grandchildren.

I think Eileen's daughter still lives in Sussex, and I think I have found her grandaughter living in London, She married in 2005.

I would be happy to PM this info

Wow! Thank you very much for all your time and effort. With my limited resources I have only managed to make best guess at Eileen's children, and even then their marriages have proved difficult to confirm (especially her 1st sons).
Your mention of Sussex. I have one of her children married/ living in Scunthorpe. Does this agree with any of your findings ?
JeannieR. Yes I would very much appreciate it if you could send me the details you have via PM.
With much thanks.

Just one other question now that it occurs to me. We have Peter, Esther and Mary accounted for. But I don't know what happened to Thomas. All the above are James Williams siblings. I thought that Thomas had died as. 'Child' or at least as a young adult and therefore had no children. But...... Looking at BMD records, there are a number of Thomas Smiths in Leeds at that time and around the same age. Am I wrong in assuming he died?
