Post by: drew5555 on Tuesday 04 November 14 11:51 GMT (UK)
Hello

Can anyone help with census lookup please?

Looking for John Brown a miner and Jean or Jane Devine. Lived in Holytown or Bothwell. I think they married in 1856 in Newarthill. John around 40 and his wife 30 from details on wedding certificate.

They may have a daughter , Margaret born 1859 or 60/61. Not sure about any other children or places of birth. Any help apprecuated.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat

There is this family at 45 Bothwell Street Glasgow Lanarkshire in 1861. The age for John would be different to what you said.  ???

John Brown  27 Born Glasgow. Cotton Power loom Penter
Jane Brown  23 Born Kilbride.
Margaret Brown  2 Months. Born Glasgow.

This looks like a better match and there is a gap in the children's ages. Could it be John brown was married previously  ???

1861 Bothwell Lanarkshire - all the children were born Lanarkshire.

John Brown  40 Born Lanarkshire. Coal-Miner.
Jane Brown  32 Born Tyrone. Ireland.
John Brown  16  Ann Brown  10
Mary Brown  4 William Brown  3
Margaret Brown  1
Mary Little  55 Visitor. Born Tyrone Ireland.

Sandra

Second family looks more likely. Margaret gave her parents names in a Poor law application in 1886 when she said she was 24. She gave her moyjers name as Jane Devine and father as John Brown a miner both dead.
