Microsoft products are not free!
When you buy the software, you are given a Product Key, and this is what you enter to unlock!

So, essentially what you have is illegal software! ;D :o ;D

Sometimes Microsoft products like Word are loaded on a new computer but will not work until you buy the product key, sounds like this is the case with yours.

Didn't read your last post correctly.

Do you still have the wrapping etc. from the discs, the product key should be there somewhere.

A lot of time trial versions are loaded which will ask to be activated (as its time limited)

Any time I've had to enter a Key it was the number on the Window's sticker on casing!

If it's the genuine product, the Product Key will be on the CD-ROM casing, or the sleeve insert.

Mine was preloaded, no CD and Product Number is on sticker on housing.

My PC came with Word 2010 but only a limited-function version, "Word Starter," which to be fair contains most of the tools you'd need - the major omission from my point of view is automatic indexing, cross-referencing and bookmarking. To convert this into the full version means paying for a licence key, which depending on what you want is in the £60-£120 range I think. I believe this is the normal setup.
OpenOffice Writer provides just about everything Word does, and amazingly is free to download. It can open Word documents, and save documents in Word format. So for personal use I can see no real need to buy Word.
The exception comes when other software integrates directly with Word, but that's unlikely to affect anyone just using the systems at home rather than in an integrated work environment.
So my view is - use OpenOffice and forget Word!

Well my PC came with MS Office which still hasn't been activated.. the only thing I have to do with OpenOffice is to match the default margins with 2.52 of Word and then everything works fine.

Anyway there is MS Word available free on MS Office (Cloud) with 6 GB of storage so why even buy Word?

Haven't used MS Word for years.

Are you trying to create a Family Tree?

Do a search (Google, Bing, or whatever) for "Free Family History Software".

Derek,

We've got just the board here on RootsChat for you:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=422.0
"FH Programs, Organisation, Presentation"

There are lots of topics on organising and presenting family trees.

It may be that you just need a template to put your names into (using OpenOffice) possibly though, if you are just looking to print it out for somebody.

Here's one template I found for you: http://templates.openoffice.org/en/template/family-tree-template
Also, there's a page of them here: http://www.openofficetemplates.com/category/family

Try Legacy - a number of users here have recommended the free version in the past
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/

if you like the free version you can always upgrade or try other programs.
Have a read at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=158637.0 for previous discussions and suggestions

Once you have the info in your chosen program - I use Family Historian, which is not free, but wich I think is pretty good value, you can get the program to draw family trees which you can then copy and paste into a Word document (or OpenOffice or whatever). Here's a screenshot from Family Historian; the Copy diagram puts the family tree onto the computer's clipboard; then in Word just use Edit>Paste and hey presto! the diagram is in your document.
If you don't like the formatting of the family tree, you'll find the software allows you to make it suit your preferences.
One word of caution - you are using Windows XP which is in computing terms elderly. Do check that any program you try to install will work in XP - the websites will confirm for you.
