Title: John Brown and Frances Rookles
Post by: pckl on Sunday 02 November 14 17:09 GMT (UK)
Hello all.

I wonder if anyone could perhaps have a look into this couple for me; John Brown and Frances Rookles.

They married on 12th May 1767 at Sockburn. I can find nine children for the couple. Below are their children's names, their dates of baptism and where they were baptised:

Mary - 1768, Eryholme, Yorkshire
Margaret - 1769, Eryholme
Elizabeth - 1773, Eryholme
Edward - 1778, Eryholme
Ann - 1781, Dinsdale, Durham
Thomas - 1783, Sockburn, Durham
William - 1785, Sockburn
Jane - 1787, Sockburn
Dorothy - 1792, Sockburn

On Thomas, Jane and Dorothy's baptisms, their abode is given as Over Dinsdale.

Frances died first in 1817 aged 73, and John in 1819 aged 78. On both records, their abodes were Over Dinsdale and both were buried at Sockburn.

I immediately thought that Frances wouldn't be much of a challenge to research, simply because of her surname Rookles, contrasting to her husband with a name like John Brown.  :-[

As for their children, I have only found marriages for two of the daughters. Margaret (My 4x Great Grandmother) who married Robert Hymas in 1797 at Sockburn, and Dorothy who married William Coates in 1812 also at Sockburn.

Does anyone know where I could look for more on this family?

Thanks  ;D

Hello and thanks for that Janis.

Obviously can't be certain, but I'd imagine this Thomas is their son baptised the previous year. Sad if it was.

Thanks very much!

A JANE Brown, Spinster,  married John PREST, Bachelor of Thornton Le Street in County of York, 27 Dec 1823, Old Parish, Sockburn
(Source FreeREG)

If I have the right Couple in 1851, John says he is born c 1801 Knayton, Yorkshire, and Jane c 1787 Dinsdale, Durham.
John is a Farmer
Living in Northallerton, Yorks 1841/1851.
They appear to have no Children .

Hello Trish

Just checked this all out, and it definitely looks like the right Jane.

I checked Durham Records Online. No Rookles on their records.

I then checked Free Reg. Only the Brown/Rookles marriage is listed.

Thanks for checking, barryd.

I've often wondered if the surname was spelt differently or even mistranscribed. I tried to imagine how it could possibly sound, but I don't really have an idea what an accent from the Durham/Yorkshire border sounds like - that is if Frances was native to those parts!

Cheers, pckl  :)

Hi.
Believe this is my family with Mary marrying my ancestor John Park at Kirby Wiske on 16/5/1791.
I have Mary Parks(nee Brown) family and burial details. They lived at West Tanfield initially moving to Eryholme and Blackwell later
I looked at Rookles some time ago. Was not convinced of Rookles as a surname but seem to think it was something else but not Rashells . Would need to search all my papers.
Drop me a line if you want their family on e mail- *
Regards
Ian
