Title: What happened to Hannah?Hi again
Post by: NickT on Saturday 01 November 14 18:14 GMT (UK)
Hi again,

One last plea for assistance with this family if I may.

Hannah GRESTY (b.1883, Ringway, Cheshire) = William Arthur LAMB (b. 1880, Wharton, Cheshire)

William was discharged from active war service with the Cheshire Regiment in 1914 (Service number 17693).  Unfit for further military service.  He died in 1939.

I am trying to find out if they had any kids and what happened to Hannah after William died.

Any help much appreciated.

Death 1962 Bucklow - Hannah LAMB - is definitely not her.  I have the cert in my hand.

Married 1912 so have you used freebmd to check for Lamb births with mothers maiden name Gresty?

Have you checked for a re-marriage for Hannah after 1939?

Did Hannah report his death?

Are you sure about Hannah's date of birth. I agree the Hannah Gresty b 1883 in Ringway is a candidate, however I have looked at William's WWI pension record which notes that he marries a Hannah Gresty, widow, and they have an address in Dunham Town.

there is this family in 1901 in Dunham Massey

John Gresty    38
Hannah Gresty    37
Mary Morgan Gresty    11
Phoebe Gresty    9
Margaret Alice Gresty    6
Bertha Minnie Gretsy    3

RG13, 3326, 63, 20.

John dies 7 June 1910. If you search for Hannah and her family in 1911, you will find the full list quite interesting.

this Hannah Gresty is b c1863. there's this death which would fit

Hannah Lamb
Q4 1914
Age 51 [b c1863]
Bucklow Vol 8a, p252

Yes, the pension record has been endorsed with widow but you misunderstand why.  This would have been when William died in 1939 as the pension would have then become a widow's war pension and the records would be amended to reflect this change.  I am sure that I have the correct Hannah as Gresty was her maiden name and not her married name as with the Dunham Town Hannah. It was worth checking though.

On second thoughts you could be right.  I need to take a closer look and not be quite so dismissive.

A copy of the 1912 marriage cert will show whether she was a widow and will also show her age and her fathers name which will give you her maiden name

Thank you. You are right.  I've adopted the wrong Hannah and therefore the wrong husband.  I'm back at my starting point again with Hannah GRESTY (b.1883, Ringway, Cheshire).  I need to find the correct marriage for her now.

The William Lamb who died Bucklow 1939 was 59 so b 1880 - which would suggest he was the one who married Hannah in 1912 - you need that marriage cert

From Cheshire BMD

DAWSON   Hannah   LAMB   William A   Bucklow, Civil Marriage   Trafford   ALT/29/171
GRESTY   Hannah   LAMB   William A   Bucklow, Civil Marriage   Trafford   ALT/29/171
LAMB   William A   DAWSON   Hannah   Bucklow, Civil Marriage   Trafford   ALT/29/171
LAMB   William A   GRESTY   Hannah   Bucklow, Civil Marriage   Trafford   ALT/29/171

Correct.  She was still at home in 1911.

Cheshire BMD has the marriage of William A Lamb and Hannah Gresty/Dawson.

I'm unsure where that takes you but presumably she is a widow.

Are you following Hannah or William?

The 1912 marriage has been discounted so the search is to find the correct marriage for Hannah Gresty b 1883 (if there was one)

OK, better clarify.

Hannah GRESTY, the widow who married William Arthur LAMB is the wrong Hannah.

I need to find who Hannah GRESTY (b. abt.1908 Hale/Ringway, Cheshire) married.

Thanks.

You previously said she was b 1883 Ringway

Yes I understood that but when I posted it did seem as though you were still a bit  unsure and then Carole added the same info after my post.
I wanted you to be clear about the 1912 marriage, that's all.  ;)

I've not exactly made it easy to follow this thread.  Top points to anyone that has any idea what it is about.

She probably didn't get married at all!

You could try death certificates for her parents to see who registered their deaths.
Unfortunately, there are two couples with same names and similar ages so that will be a bit of a problem also. :)

I have a feeling - you know, one of those hunches that you get from time to time - that she might of been more commonly known as 'Annie'

I'm going to check it out (as far as I can)

I've seen this and think it could be so.

This family baptised their children with formal names and then called them by familiar forms.

For example, sister Mary Ann was recorded as 'Pollie' when she got married and sister Sarah was known as 'Lizzie'.  I can't see them leaving Hannah out of the tradition.

I've ordered the certificate but on a lighter note I came across this Hannah during my search.

Hannah B Carefull

I wonder if she was.

Annie Gresty  aged 75  Sept Q 1957    Bucklow

Not this one.  Cert came today.

I think she could be this one:-

Roger Warren HILLKIRK = Hannah GRESTY @ Chorlton 1912 (8c 1467).

They had a son in 1915 called Roger Norman HILLKIRK and he married Eileen WALSH in 1940.

Looks as if they were childless.  Can anyone else find any children for Roger and Eileen?

Thank you.

This is definitely the correct Hannah.

Eileen (her D-I-L) died intestate in 2001.

Sorry I should qualify my 'definitely'

Marriage at St Matthew's Ardwick names Hannah's father (Hugh) and his occupation (Farmer) correctly.

My very last outstanding question for this twig on my tree is

Did Roger and Eileen HILLKIRK have any children?

If Roger & Eileen only married in 1940, any possible children could still be living so no details can be posted here.

Agreed.  I seek only to know if there are any living descendants at all or if the line has come to an end following the marriage of Roger and Eileen.  I don't want any living persons identities to be disclosed.

What I'm looking for is an answer along the lines of 'There were two children'
Thanks,

Nick.
