Title: McAlaster, McAllister, Macalister / Salmond, Salmon / Cuthel, Cuthill
Post by: Craigellachie2019 on Saturday 01 November 14 10:45 GMT (UK)
I have had little breakthrough today and discovered a line of searching was wrong.  I now have proof with certificates and they show Janet Macalister married Peter Salmond at Gorbals in 1786.  They had a son George in Glasgow in 1789 and daughter Elisabeth in 1787.
George married Janet Cuthel (Cuthill) in Kilsyth in 1810.  George and Janet had daughters Elisabeth in 1818, Margaret in 1825, Janet in 1816 and Mary in 1822.  Also had sons Peter in 1820 and John in 1813.
If anyone is searching any of these names it would be great to hear from you.
I can't get further back than Peter and Janet's marriage in 1786 - don't know who their parents were, and not sure when they died.
Thank you

possible birth - same area - but would make him 30 at the marriage in 1786 ?? is it possible he may have been married before ?
( there are 3 baptisms in 1781 /1783 / 1785 for Salmond  to Peter Salmond and Janet Barr in exactly the same area reference )
no way of knowing but maybe make a note of them for future reference ??
added...another child in 1779 to Peter Salmond and Janet Barr = 4 children ....more than likely a different Peter Salmond

Hi Annie,

My wife Debbi Burton is a descendant of John Salmon b 4/9/1813 in Kilsyth. We taking a trip to Glasgow in May 2025 and would like to locate any burial locations for George Salmond b 1/3/1789 in Glasgow, his wife Janet Cuthel Salmon b 8/4/1787 in Kilsyth or any of their children:
                Janet b 1/25/1816
      Elizabeth b 6/24/1818
      Peter b 5/31/1820
      Mary b 10/24/1822
      Margaret b 3/26/1825

We would also enjoy connecting with any other descendants of the Salmon(Salmond), Crawford, Cuthel and Simpson families.

Joanie Alexander here in Vermont indicated that you have been in touch with her in the past as you are related to Peter Salmon b 5/31/1820.

Any leads will be helpful.

Thanks,

John Burton

Hello John, apologies for not replying sooner.  I haven't had contact from Rootschat for years so had basically given up and not logged on in quite a while.
I hope your trip to Glasgow in May was fruitful.  Yes Peter Salmond was my 3rd gr grandfather, George being my 4th.  Peter bought his second wife (Jane Boak Aitken nee Gartshore) and 3 sons to Australia in 1886, together with his orphaned granddaughter, my gr grandmother Jessie Haddow.  Her mother was Peter's daughter Janet Salmond who had married Thomas Haddow.  Jessie met and married another Scot, Donald Macdonald (from Angus) in Townsville Queensland Australia and married in 1888.  My grandmother Jane Gartshore Macdonald was the firstborn of the line in Australia in 1889.  One of Peter's sons - also Peter - had married a widow before coming to Australia. She coincidentally was the daughter of Peter Snr's 2nd wife.  She was also a Jane - Jane Aitken.  She had been married to a 'Tod' who had died.  Peter Jnr and Jane had four children, however all four children and Peter Jnr's wife died in Townsville and are buried in the West End cemetery there.  I believe not long after the family decided to go back to Scotland, however Jessie having married and started a family, they stayed in Australia.  I found my Peter Snr and his 2nd wife, Peter Jnr and Peter and 2nd wife's son William all back in Scotland in the 1901 census in Coatbridge.  The third son who had come to Australia - George - I have found no record of him going back, nor any record in Australia.  He had left the family in Queensland and travelled to Victoria as a newspaper advertisement looking for his whereaboutsw, last known in Werribee, Victoria was posted by Jessie.  My theory is they were looking for him to see if he wanted to go back to Scotland with the family, however I haven't been able to find him anywhere.  Peter's son William married Margaret McKerrall in 1909 and lived in Glasgow.  He and his wife don't appear to have had any children.  I have a postcard from  William to Jessie in WW1, as one of Jessie's sons, George William Salmond Macdonald joined the Australia Army with his future brother in law (my grandfather) George Stewart, another Scot from Moray.  William was looking forward to a visit from young George.  I hope this is helpful.  My tree is on Ancestry under Anne Stewart family tree.  Possibly the easiest way to find it is to search my grandmother Jane Gartshore Macdonald b 1889 Townsville Queensland Australia, died 1973 Townsville Queensland Australia.  Her husband was George Stewart b 1887 Lossiemouth Moray Scotland, died 1928 Townsville Queensland Australia.  If you search grandma's mother's line you will find my Salmonds.
Kind regards
Anne Keys nee Stewart
