				Hi all

I am looking for a little girl on the 1861 Census
I am pretty certain she would be living with a single mother
Likely in Rotherhithe or Lambeth regions

Susannah/Susan Martha (can be any of these) ROBINSON
 She would have born 1852-1855.
So anywhere from 6-10 years old on the census

 Her mother was Mary/Martha

Anybody able to give me a hand

 Thanks
 LUV

Was she born in Rotherhithe or elsewhere?   If she was illegitimate - her mother could have married before 1861 and she may be shown under her mothers married name.

If you have her on later censuses - what birthyear/birthplace are shown

				Hi again CaroleW

You get around!   ;)This young lady I believe is mostly likely the 'adopted' daughter of John Thompson, the guy I am looking for in Essex.

I have spent years on this family and revisit it every few years in hopes that one of these times I will find a missing piece of the puzzle.

I believe John Thompson married Mary/Martha ?? between 1861 and 1871.  As, after an exhaustive search a few years ago the only John Thompson on the 1861 census that fit appears in the New Bailey Prison, Salford, Lancashire on the 1861 Census. He says he was not married.

As this family only appears together in 1871.

So with a lot of elimination work through the efforts of many people here at rootschat there was  no Susan/Susannah or Mary Thompson in the 1861 census without a father that fit.

So I had to assume my 2x G Grandmother was illegitimate and so would appear on the 1861 census just her and her mother. But I had no idea of a last name. Assuming that they would have only taken on the surname Thompson when presumably her mother married John Thompson after he got out of prison.

Robinson is a surname that was recently brought to my attention.  An old piece of paper in some stuff from my Grandmother listed her grandmother as Susan Robinson - not Susan Thompson.

So I decided maybe this was the link I needed but so far I cannot find a marriage of any Mary/Martha Robinson to a John Thompson nor the birth of a Susannah/Susan Martha/Mary Robinson.

I thought perhaps I could find them on the 1861 census with this last name

 thanks

				Hi Vera

Yes I saw that birth but was not able to find her 1861

If she is minus a father 1861 we could be getting somewhere....

 Thanks

So I had to assume my 2x G Grandmother
Do you know what name she married under?  What maiden name is shown on any of her childrens birth certs?
-
Can't see a Susannah Martha in 1861 with anyone but then, as you know, she could be on the census as Susan or Martha but not seeing that either with a lone mother.

There is a birth, possibly illegitimate, for a Martha Robinson born Stepney 5th March 1854.  Mother is Mary Robinson.  Could be a workhouse registration.  I will try to put up a link.

				Thanks Vera and CaroleW

She married as Susannah Marie Thompson but this "version" of her first and middle names, on her marriage certificate, is the only time in the documentation I have found that these two names appear like that.   And it looked like she was hesitating when she signed almost like she was writing a name that she seldom used or even knew how to spell.

She married Frederick Woodage and then once married to him she appears as Mary Woodage, Martha Woodage, Susan Woodage on her children's various births and christenings and on the census.

On the 1871 census she is I believe Mary Thompson on Canrobert in Bethnal Green with father John Thompson and mother Mary Thompson.

But they, as a family appear no where in the 1861 Census and their is no christening or baptism that I have ever been able to find for "Susannah Marie Thompson" father John Thompson.

It is a long sorted story that keeps going and going and closure with

				Hi Again CaroleW and Vera

Just to give you a bit more info on Susannah Marie Thompson

She married December 25 1875 to Frederick Woodage in Bethnal Green
She lists her age as full and her father as John Thompson Weaver
Her residence at that time was 17 Canrobert Street, Bethnal Green

1881 Census in Bethnal Green -  she is Susan Woodage born Rotherhithe age 25
1891 Census in Mile End - she is Susan Marie Woodage born Bethnal Green age 36
1901 Census in Bethnal Green -she is Susan Woodage born Lambeth age 44
She died in 1911(in the Lynatic Asylum) and on her death certificate she is Mary Susan Woodage
Her 'in memory' card, from her family, says her name is Martha Susan Woodage

On the birth certificate of her daughter Emily (my G Grandmother)
She is listed as Susan Woodage formerly Thompson

On baptisms for other children she is:
 Susanah Marie, Susan, Susan Marie

Marriages for two of her daughters (here in Canada):
 Martha Susan Thompson
 Susan M Thompson

However the problem is where is she and her parents in 1861 and where is her baptism if indeed John Thompson is her father?
