Hello all,
Is anyone else researching the Pretty family from Halstead, Essex? In particular, William Henry (I believe he went by Henry) b. 1836 in Halstead, married Sarah Porter, b.1835 in Halstead, and married 1855 in Halstead. They had at least 4 children, Julia (1855), Louisa (1860), Thomas (1864) and Henry (1867), all born in Halstead. They all (except Wm Henry) immigrated to Canada between 1880-1885, I'm assuming after his death.
What I'm desperately seeking, is information and confirmation on William Henry's parents. I've found a possibility or two, but I just can't confirm anything. I'm stumped!
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Terri

Henry John K Pretty died in 1867 in the Halstead registration district.

Hi "Sue"
You found the marriage?? All I'd been able to find was the index, so no other names were mentioned. I had not seen the baptism you mentioned either, but it sure sounds like it might be him. Thank you so much! May I ask where you found these gems??

I found the death on free BMD but I could not find his burial in the two main Halstead churches.
Holy Trinity, Halstead
February 18th, 1855
Henry Pretty, bach, clock in factory, father as said
Sarah Porter, spin, weaver, father George Porter, labourer
both of full age
witnesses
Frederick Hawkes
Elizabeth Porter

In Halstead in 1841 there is a John Kemp, occupation baker. on to 1851 and the same chap is a town crier. :D
-
I can't thank you enough for this! This is fantastic. The fact that Frederick Hawkes was a witness to the marriage is all the confirmation I need to put the pieces together.
I've been driving myself crazy with this for months, I wish I had asked this question earlier. I had my answer in 5 minutes!
THANK YOU!!!
Terri

Have you got Henrys mothers marriage, as it looks like she married Frederick Hawkes, if not will post details.
-
I just found that, thanks. I'd seen all of that before, but could never verify if that's where Henry fit in. Mary Ann's marriage says her fathers name was Robert, no surname. Should I assume that Pretty is Mary's maiden name, and not married name? (Henry born out of wedlock?)
-
Mary is a spinster on the marriage so yes Henry born out of wedlock and a good bet that Mr, Kemp the baker is his father, but proving it might be difficult.
It looks like the Lydia Pretty listed with the family in the census is probably Marys mother.
-
Oh, that's a juicy bit. The plot thickens.
Thanks so much for all of your help!!

This looks like the marriage on the Suffolk Marriage Index
Robert Pritty
Lydia Bridges
12th October, 1810
Great Bealings.
-
Oh wow! That's wonderful, thank you! I was wondering if I'd ever find a maiden name for Lydia!
You've gone above and beyond, thanks so much!
-
I'm back. ;)
I can't seem to find John Kemp as a baker in 1841 or the town crier in 1851 in Halstead. Did you find him as John Kemp or John Kemp Pretty?
Also, I haven't been able to find anything on Robert Pretty, Mary Ann's father. Do you happen to see anything about where he comes from?
Thanks,
Terri

Oh my. I found John Kemp on the '41 and '51 census'. The reason I couldn't find him before was because i had put in an approximate date of birth for him. I was way off! He was 30 years older than Mary Ann? Yikes!

Lydia is also living with mary Ann in 1851 aged 68 and 1861 in halstead, aged 80. Says she was born in wandsworth, Suffolk.
On the 1851, henry has the surname hawkes. He's down as the son in law, aged 15. I'm guessing they really meant step son.

Thanks NannyJ!
I think I've found Lydia's baptism, it lists her parents as Samuel Bridges and Anne Mills. So nice to be able to trace her back another generation.
I'm still having some trouble finding Lydia's husband, Robert Pretty. There are quite a few Robert Pretty's (Pritty) and I just can't pin point which one he might be!
-
Any idea if he died in Suffolk or halstead?
-
Unfortunately, no idea at all!

Hi, I am trying to sort out "which Lydia" There are two, one married Robert Pritty in Great Bealings,Suffolk 12/10/1810 and the other married Daniel Stanford 18/9/1807 in Syleham, Suffolk.
The Lydia Bridges I am looking for was ch21/12/1783 in Frostenden, Suffolk daughter of Samuel Bridges and Anne Mills. A number of trees in Ancestry have both options but the same parents. No parent is on either marriage in any records I could find. Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried posting on the suffolk board or were these in essex in the early 1800s?

Thank you for the suggestion.
