Title: Annie BELSHAW, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Convicted of Manslaughter
Post by: Razzle_Dazzle on Monday 27 October 14 13:49 GMT (UK)
Hello, y'all.

I am looking for information on Annie Belshaw (nee?) of Idlewells, Sutton-in-Ashfield.

What I've been able to find:

From The British Journal of Nursing Supplement, 4, August 1917...

Annie was a midwife, but was 'struck off the roll' and had her 'certificate cancelled' because she had performed an abortion which resulted in the death of a woman. She was sentenced to three years in prison.

From a couple of Notts newspapers...

In 1939, she was sentenced to seven years for manslaughter for performing an abortion which resulted in a death. Her age in 1939 is either 57 or 69. She was a widow, and was a shopkeeper at 16 Idlewells.

Ancestry gives me two possible Annies. ???

I would love to know more about her life and what happened to her after prison.

Can anybody point me to anything I could maybe find online? (I'm in the US.)

Thanks! :)

Think this is the right family as there is a WWI record on Ancestry of a William Clarke, whose next of kin was his wife Catherine Edith, nee Belshaw, of 16 Idlewells, Sutton in Ashfield

This looks like a possible marriage - the Stroud registration district covers Nailsworth and the other pairing are definitely together in 1891

Q2 1894  Stroud    6a   590
Belshaw    Thomas   <<<
Brinkworth    William
Charington    Annie       <<<
Kemp    Minnie Clara

There's also a marriage for an Eliza Belshaw in Stroud in 1892, and a death of a Maria Belshaw b c1841 in Stroud in 1893. This is pointing to a family with strong conenctions to this family - here in Mansfield in 1881 and in Kirkby in Ashfield in 1891

Thomas Belshaw    41
Maria Belshaw    40  <<<
Rebeccar Belshaw    19
John Belshaw    17
George Belshaw    15
Thomas Belshaw  12   <<<
Eliza Belshaw    6 <<<

the problem is that Thomas D Belshaw (as he is on 1891) has a different wife in 1901 and 1911, and in 1901 is only a couple of doors away from Annie!

Obviously a family who are into medical procedures. Cyril is fined in 1942 for being a bogus dentist who commits assault by extracting a tooth (and charged with cruelty to a pit pony in 1917)

They look like an "interesting" family. I haven't got a subscription to British Newspapers Archive, but the free search suggests an incident in Idlewells in 1915 in which the Blshaw name crops up (not sure of role) and involves vitriol being thrown and someone losing an eye, an illegal betting shop in 1931 and young Charles Royle Belshaw breaking into a shop in 1925

The 1931 case where Annie is prosecuted for using her home for betting purposes brought back some memories from many years ago Late 1940's) in an area only a few miles from where Annie lived

There was a local lady who was the midwife (unqualified) -she was sent for if there were birth complications and paid a fee -she also was paid to "lay" people out after death - she also would go and dress local girls (for a fee) in preparation for their weddings -and she used her home for betting purposes - apparantly as her mother before her had done - illegal but many knew. I don't think she was ever taken to court
It looks like it may have been the "norm" to have had someone like Annie in the mining villages ??
