Title: Shipwreck of Nelson Wood 1843
Post by: maclennan25 on Saturday 25 October 14 20:29 BST (UK)
Does anybody know where I could find any information on a crew member of a sunk ship?

The vessel was called the Nelson Wood and sunk off Ireland in 1843. More info on it at: http://mightyseas.perso.sfr.fr/marhist/maryport/nelson_wood.htm

My reason for asking is that I'm trying to discover if one of the crew is one of my missing direct line ancestors. He was at home (Scotland) in 1841 with his wife and two infant sons and his given occupation would fit. By 1851, his wife is listed as a widow and I have run out of ideas looking for him.

I cannot move further back in my family tree without more info about him and wondered if he died at sea if there may be more info somewhere that I haven't discovered.

Any advice/ideas would be appreciated.

This might help to start with:

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/CUMBERLAND/2013-11/1385418320

It has transcriptions of "Carlisle Journal, 09 Dec 1843 - Wreck of the Nelson Wood" and lists both survivors and those that drowned.

Others on RC may come up with better sources of information.

Edit: Actually, here may be a better source for the same info:

Thank you for your reply.

I have seen these links and a few others before, but other than the names of the seamen lost, I can't find any other information. What I'm really hoping to find (if possible) is a more accurate description, hopefully the home town or at least the region/county each of them were from.

thanks again,
:)

If you could give us his name and details of his family, and his location in the 1841 census, someone might come up with a pointer to further information

I Came about this post and I know it is several years old as I was looking for info on this ship - my interest is in John Fletcher who was on board as shown by this
