Title: Nottingham Militia
Post by: Louthlass on Thursday 23 October 14 21:38 BST (UK)
I have a marriage in York for a Marmaduke  Penson and Isabella TUNSTALL 16 Jan 1797. it states Marmaduke was a private in the Nottinghamshire militia, I would appreciate advise on furthering my knowledge on this and  would there be records that would give his place of birth?
Thank-you

I can't find anyone of that name baptised in Notts in an appropriate timeframe. However, there was a Marmaduke Penson, son of Thomas and Ann, baptised in Blyth 26.3.1825 (abode Barnby Moor). It's an unusual name so I'd wonder about a family link.

There's also a marriage for Marmaduke Penson and Anne Keall in Boston, Lincolnshire, on 20 Feb 1794 and again it states that Marmaduke was in the Nottinghamshire Militia.

There are other Lincolnshire marraiges (1739 and 1824) for men of the same name too.

Thank-you for your replies I am nearly sure that these Penson families are connect. Lincolnshire is there county source. The name of Marmaduke is a christian name well used in the family.I thought they were mainly farmers carpenters until recently until some militia references cropped up.
