Title: Boyd Family
Post by: jaild on Wednesday 22 October 14 04:31 BST (UK)
I am trying to find the marriage and death of Ann Boyd/Brown/Salisbury.

She was born in Scotland 1840 and came to Australia in 1861 on the Atlanta with her sister Sarah.
She married Henry Brown 1861 in Ballarat.   They had 5 children, the last four all born in the Wangaratta area as Henry worked on the Railways.

Henry was born in Canada approx 1822 with Scottish parents, and arrived in Australia 1852/53 on board the Sydney.
Henry retired from the railways approx 1884 due to ill health.  No death registration can be found for him.    Ann signed her daughter's marriage certificate as Salisbury in 1888.

Salisbury Falls in Wangaratta is named after William but no details for him can be found either.

Hope someone can help with some details as I am going around in circles.

Regards  Joan

Possibly another marriage

SALESBURY Annie  (born  GLASGOW)
GRANT Jno Thompson
Year 1901
Reg.   1392

Regarding the daughter's marriage certificate-

What was the daughter's name?
Her usual residence?
Her age?
Is her father's status noted (living deceased)?

When you say Ann signed, do you see her actual signature or an X and the name written in the clergy's hand?
Who was the other witness?
Was the marriage at Wangaratta?

What are her parents' names please?

There are a couple of deaths which may be for the Annie GRANT whose marraige Sue found.  Parent names' would help eliminate (or otherwise).  Parents for the two men would be helpful also.

..."Henry's parents were Henry Brown (Carpenter) and Mary Lawrence Davis.
Annes parents were Hugh Boyd (Forester) and Annie Cameron."

.."He was born in Canada approx 1823 and came to Australia in 1852 on the ship "Sydney", was married to Anne Boyd in 1861 at Ballarat."

.."The age of Henry Brown at his marriage was 37 years,  Anne was 21.
Henry Brown is noted as a carpenter, on his marriage certificate, it doesn't say his parents are deceased."

..."he was alive in 1871 and died before 1888.  Anne Boyd remarried after Henrys death to William Salisbury.   She signed Sarah's mc as Annie Salisbury in 1888."

Thanks CoL for linking the other threads.

Joan, you mentioned that Ann/Annie came from Scotland with her sister Sarah.

Seems there was a brother in Victoria as well

Victoria 1902, #7529
Jno Cameron BOYD, 64
Death Place:   Talbot, Victoria
Father's Name:   Boyd Hugh
Mother's name:   Ann Cameron
Estimated Birth Year:   abt 1838

PROV has a digitised will for this man, leaving all to his wife Elizabeth (so long as she remains unmarried).  A son, Angus is also mentioned. John Cameron BOYD died 19 April, 1902 and was a retired public servant, according to the probate documents.

Thanks everyone for the information.
Henry Browns parents were Henry Brown and Mary Lawrence Davis.

The daughter that was married in 1888 was Sarah McLaughlin Brown and she was married 17/5/1888 in Wangaratta and her mother has signed the certificate as Annie Salisbury.  Henry Brown is listed as a Carpenter but it does not say he was deceased.  The witnesses were William James Chandler and Alice Chandler.      The minister from the Wesleyan Church was David Birdgood.

Anne Boyds parents were Hugh Boyd and Ann Cameron.      Her siblings were Peter Boyd 1833, John Cameron Boyd 1837-1902, Sarah McLaughlin Boyd 1842-1916, Alexander Boyd 1845,
Hugh Boyd 1846 and Malcolm Boyd 1848.

Hope this sheds more light on the family

You may find it worthwhile to contact the Wangaratta Family History Society.

http://www.wfhs.org.au/

They have a list of Wangaratta surnames which includes BOYD, SALISBURY and BROWN.  No details as to whether they are related to your family.

How do you actually know it is her mother's signature on the marriage certificate ?

The certificate states the "Declaration duly made and published as by law required  and with the written consent of"  signed by Annie Salisbury, mother of Sarah Brown.    The signature of Annie is a different writing to that of the rest of the certificate and the other witnesses.  The certificate is signed by David Buckley Bridgood, Minister of the Weselyn Church Wangaratta.

I have a thread running on Ancestry.com regarding Mary Brown/Smith/Foote.  Mary, my great grandmother, was a daughter of Henry Brown and Annie Boyd.  I am also having no luck with death notices for Henry or Annie but have been given a huge amount of help through collaborating on Ancestry.com     I have most of the info posted following the initial post but am trying to find more about Mary.  She married my great grandfather Joseph Ambrose Smith in 1895 and when he died in 1897, she married John Foote in 1900.  John Foote died in 1926 and the last I know of Mary is that she was living at Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale in 1954 but with whom?  Maybe a new husband but nobody left in my family who can tell me. Mary had a son, William Alexander in 1893 (my grandfather) and he claims Joseph Ambrose Smith as his father, but I have no proof of this.  His birth registration does not name a father, though William Alexander claims him as such when he marries my grandmother in 1919.

Anyone out there with info on this line?
Interested in this Boyd family line and if anyone has been able to find deaths for Ann Boyd and Henry Brown or Ann Brown and William Salisbury or the possible marriage mentioned.
Have a huge brick wall for deaths in this family. Cannot find Ann Boyd father Ewen sometimes known as Hugh Boyd and his second wife Mary Cameron, either possibly in Scotland or did they join three children in Victoria?

Happy holidays and look forward to networking.  A marriage certificate just received indicates that the brother Alexander married Sarah Jane Burrows in Melbourne Victoria 1873 so that is four from this Boyd family in Victoria. Marriage certificate indicates their father  Hugh Boyd was an "Innkeeper". Where ? could not find him in 1861 Scotland census.  Strike any bells with anyone?

Hi Carolbea

I see you have had a response from jaild;  she and I corresponded on this family last year. She probably has more info than me, including corroborating paperwork, but if you want to compare notes with me, please email:
