I am researching the Robson family and many of the members have the middle name English.
I have Thomas English Robson who married Margaret J Borthwick in 1883. His father was Robert Goulding Robson who married Jane or Janet English in 1852 - he was born in Hartlepool and she was born in Burton Northumberland.
I have most of the census records apart from Robert Goulding Robson in 1881 . And any help finding his parents or those of Jane English would be appreciated.
kind Regards

Robert Goulding Robson who married Jane or Janet English in 1852 -
freeBMD shows Robert Robson and Jannet English.
any help finding his parents or those of Jane English would be appreciated.
The marriage certificate should give you the names of both sets of fathers, as a starting point.
Durham Records Online have this marriage. It is a pay-per-view site, but if you buy a few credits it will be very much cheaper than buying the certificate from the GRO :)

Many Thanks JenB. keyboard86 and hpool for all the information.
The marriage details lists Robert's father as Martin Robson and family search have a Martin Robson (born 1799 Hartlepool) married to Alice Goulding (born 1803 Hartlepool). The marriage was in Hartlepool in 1824. I found an Alice Robson in 1841 Census aged 35 with a son Robert aged 16 whose occupation could be Saylor or Taylor. Martin Robson possibly dead by 1841 or at sea if he was a Sailor.
Can anyone help with additional information about Martin Robson and Alice Goulding.

Hi Hpool
Sorry I was getting all confused
My Thomas English Robson died in 1938 and because I have his birth as 1855 he would have been 82. The probate was for his wife Margaret Jane Robson who died in 1925 age 61.
If you could find any details for Thomas English Robson's death among the papers you said you had I would really appreciate it
Sorry for the mix up

Hi - Jane English was my GGG grand aunt. She is the daughter of John English, formerly of Gravetye Manor. She was born 11 Feb 1828 in Belford Northumberland to John English and Sarah Redpath (spelling of surname can't be confirmed as yet). Janes brother, William English migrated to Australia and was a gold miner in Hill End NSW (I am a descendant of his line).

Thank you Bradles for your post.
Did your GGG grand aunt stay in England and did she marry Robert Goulding Robson at St Hilda's in Hartlepool in 1852?

Hi Tina, Yep- Jane English was born 11 Feb in Belford, Northumberland in 1828 baptised in Belford St Sotch Church on March 19, 1828. By 1861 she is in Hartlepool with husband Robert Robson and two children Sarah Goulding Robson and Thomas English Robson. Sarah Goulding Robson went on to marry Samuel Exworthy and move to Michigan in the US... back to Jane, she had 10 siblings. James b1829, William b1831, Sarah b1830, Ann b1835, John b1837, Isabella b1839, Elizabeth (Betsey) b1840, Robert b1842, George b1846 and Maragret b1849. Their mother Sarah Redpath / Ridpath died after giving birth to Margaret in 1849. Margaret English also married in to the Exworthy family in 1874 in Tudhoe, and likewise moved to Michigan. Her husband John Exworthy was Samuels cousin.

Many thanks for your Reply.
My daughter's husband is descended from Thomas English Robson. Some of the Robson family still live in Hartlepool and still carry on with the middle name of English. All my Robson notes are with my daughter in Hartlepool so I will need to check them with the information you sent and then get back to you.
Kind Regards

Hi Bradles
I have been over to Hartlepool and checked our Robson/English tree.
We have a Jane English in the 1841 Census living in Belford Northumberland with parents John English (agricultural labourer) and Sarah both aged 30. Do you have evidence of a marriage between these two that confirms Sarah's maiden name and the names of their parents. Also do you have Sarah's birth or baptism records. I would be grateful for any information that you are willing to share about the English family. I wondered if any other members of the family carried on the English name as a middle name, as Robert Robson and Jane did.

Tina, my name is Ian English Robson and Thomas English Robson was my grandfather. My sister Rev Claire English Robson spent some time a few years ago tracing the family tree and can probably give you more help if you need it. We neither of us live in Hartlepool now

Many Thanks Ian for your reply to my post. As you will see I started this research for my daughter and son in law. His family's name is English Robson. My daughter did some research in Hartlepool library about 8 years ago and I did some on Ancestry. She has all the paperwork and so before I request any information from your sister I will check with her where she is up to. I think it is the link back to Jane or Jannet English married to Robert Goulding in 1852 and the names of her parents that we were a bit stuck on. The post from Bradles in 2015 offers some information but as yet we have no definite documentation. We need to find the birth certificate for Jane/Jannet English. Perhaps your sister can help?
Again thank you for your reply.

Sure, i think Claire was concentrating on our own descendents which included our mothers family, called Harland but at the time of her research she lived in London close to Somerset House. In fact I think she started this research over 6 yrs ago.
May I know the name of your son in law and who his father was? Im assuming we must know one another or of one another, Im now 63yrs and live in Hong Kong.
I never knew my grandfather but I did know his wife, Grannie Robson, and they did live in Clifton Avenue, Hartlepool. Thomas and Margaret had a daughter called Margaret, (Muff), my father Robert (Robin), Philip (Pip), twins, John and Stanley. All have died but their children, my cousins were all christened with the name English Robson. Im unsure whether their children are also christened with English Robson.
As I understood it somebody called Jane English married a Robson generations ago and this couple decided to keep joint surnames. But how accurate that info is Ive no idea. "English" was never my surname, simply a middle name.

You must then be the Ian who wrote an article to the Hartlepool Mail a few years ago which was published around about the time of the Tall Ships race in Hartlepool about the family business that used to be in Church Street.

Yes, there used to be a timber importing business called TE Robsons in a yard in old Hartlepool which I believe was started by my great grandparents. It was closed in the 60's credit squeeze and my father bought the shop in Church Street which he operated as a DIY shop. He was building a trimaran on the top floor of the shop but died before he could complete it.

Because this is a public site and it is not my family I will talk to my daughter and son in law tonight and see if they wish to contact you. Thank you for getting in touch and yes the middle name English is still being used.
Regards
