Hi, I am stumped trying to find this lady who is my G-G-grandmother. The 1851 census notes that she was born in Layer de la Haye and is 30 years old, But her 1838 marriage certificate has her as a 'minor'. I have a large spreadsheet of the Curtis's of Aberton/Langenhoe/Layer de la Haye and a few other places, but the only Sarah that I can find was born and died in 1814. The Marriage certificate says her father was William.
I have spent quite a bit of time in SEAX with no luck, and FamilySearch.org says that there is one born 1817, but I can't find her.
Any Hints on how I proceed?
Thanks,

Hi,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Is this the Sarah CURTISS that marries John Marchant Smith in 1838?
If so I can't find the 1851 census you refer to, I can see a John and Sarah SMITH living in Layer de Haye in 1841 which only says she was born in County and in 1851 and 1861 she gives her POB as Birch, Essex. All these give her DOB as 1816 or 1817.
Regards,
Daisy

Hi
You say she was 30 in 1851 but a minor in 1838. There is no problem here, to be 30 in 1851 she would have been 17 in 1838 and at that time would be a minor until reaching 21. Remember that the age in the census might be 'approximately'.

Yes, there is a Sarah CURTIS Baptised 25 Dec 1814, St. John the Baptist, Layer-de-la-Haye, Essex.
Parents WILLIAM/JEMIMA ( a SAMUEL was Baptised same day)
(FreeREG several other Children to them from 1805)
There is a Sarah Buried 11 Jan 1815 same Church, an infant.
But it may not be the same one born 1814 as no Parents names are shown that I can see.
If you look at the 1841 as referenced by Daisy, William/Jemima Curtis are living a few doors away from John/Sarah Smith.
1851 Jemima is born c 1780, Peasenhall, Suffolk
FreeREG has William Bapt 11 July 1784 to JAMES/ANN
Does the M/C have Sarahs Father as a Labourer/Ag Lab?
Who were the Witnesses?
I cant find the 1851 Census you refer to also.
Trish :)

Thanks all for your replies. Sorry that it has taken me so long to think about returning here.
In 1851 Sarah Ann was married to John Merchant and living in Grays, Essex. That's why you can't find her.
The other Sarah born/died 1814 was a different family.
Cheers,
Peter
