Title: Duel marriages and baptisms
Post by: Danny K on Thursday 16 October 14 14:05 BST (UK)
This is just a general question.
Some of my ancestor's were baptised in a catholic church, then later baptised again in a c of e church. This was in the 1850s and 1860s. I also have ancestor's who in 1820 were married in a catholic church, and two days later were married in a c of e church.

Why would this be ???

From 25th March 1754 until the introduction of Civil Registration from 1st July 1837, a legally valid marriage had to be in a C of E church, except for Quakers and Jews.

This was under An Act for the better preventing of clandestine Marriages. (1753) Lord Hardwicke’s Act

Duplicate baptisms may be because the parents are of different denominations. Both families are satisfied that the child is properly baptised in their own tradition and no-one tells the clergy involved what has been decided on.
Check for parents' baptisms in both lots of churches to see if this is likely.

In Scotland it is not unusual to find 2 Church records of the same marriage.
These are often Banns(announcement of intent to marry) , if the bride and groom were from different Parishes then there can be 2 records.
