Hi,
I would be grateful if someone local to the Cheltenham area could please photograph the West Panel of the Cheltenham WW1 Memorial Obelisk for me as I am unable to travel to Cheltenham and I have recently discovered that one of my ancestors' names were added to the War Memorial a few years after it was unveiled so his name was added to the West Panel - E J WALE.
Could you please let me know if this would be possible. Thank you.

Hi,
I do not have the technology to help you, but I can confirm that the Cenotaph is located outside Cheltenham Borough Council Offices in the Promenade. I can confirm the following though:-
Edmund Joseph WALE, 30871, Lance Corporal, 8 Princess of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment), died of wounds on the 4th April 1918.
Lance Corporal Edmund Joseph WALE was born in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, and enlisted in the 8th Battalion, Berkshire Regiment, whilst living in Cheltenham. He was serving in France in 1918 at the time of the German spring offensive. His battalion was part of the 18th Division defending the Somme sector and on the 4th April was engaged in the Battle of Avre with the Australian Brigade, near Dernancourt, south of Albert. The ferocity of the German attack forced the defenders to give up some ground, but in the main the assault was blunted. Lance Corporal WALE was killed on this day and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial and Cheltenham Borough Cenotaph, The Promenade, Cheltenham.
I am NOT related but have a hobby researching Cheltenham's fallen in WWI & WWII.

Thank you for the helpful info, Victor.
I'm unable to travel to Cheltenham myself to take the photo of the war memorial panel so any help from RootsChatters would be most appreciated.

Hopefully, a fellow RootsChatterer will take up the cudgels.
Good hunting!

Hi, I don't know if you've managed to find photos somewhere else, but I was in Cheltenham today, and took these, which I hope might be suitable.

Just in case it's of interest, this is a picture taken today (Remembrance Sunday) showing the West Panel of the Cheltenham War Memorial, as part of the Remembrance ceremony.

I didn't take it but it was posted publicly in the Days Gone By in Cheltenham group.
