Is anyone out there researching the family of James and Harriottee Spiers of Karori.
Arrived on the ship Oriental in 1839 from London with no children. Have there passenger records.
Married 1834 at St Marys Church, Haggerston. London. Have Parish record with no parents names etc. Witness's were used on other marriages the same week.
James born 1812 re the NZ Gazette. No information on were. James died 1872 Karori.
Harriotte was nee Friend, have no other information on her either.
Cannot find any links from New Zealand back to the records in the UK as prior to census and registration, marriage has nothing to help.
Have been searching this family for many years now and no closer to finding their families in the UK. :)

Both those names, SPIERS and FRIEND, are commemorated with street names in the suburb of Karori.

Hi,
Just throwing this in. The burial locator states that Harriotte was mentioned in a book "High Point", Page 309, at St Marys, Karori, Wellington. I am guessing this is a book that has been published by a Historical Society.

The correct title of this book is Commanding a high point by Margaret Alington.
Looks at the history of St Mary's Church, Karori, the first Anglican church in the Wellington suburb.

Thanks Minehaha for the information. I have all the New Zealand information its just linking back to
the UK records that is the problem. I descend from Joseph Frederick Spiers line and from their youngest daughter Emily who married William Hughes.
Janette thanks for your information but I cannot find the link between the James Spiers who died in the UK death notice, there is a will for him and he does say he has a son James Spiers gone to NZ but they do not know were he is. There was another James Spiers in the South Island at the same time, and I don't think the age matches up.
Still will keep researching and see what else comes up now there are more records becoming available online from the UK.
I have the book on the cemetery and a few other books on early Karori.

Do you have this link:
http://www.spiers.net/kiwi/fam_41.htm
Spiers, James Frederick (b. 17 FEB 1812, d. 31 JAN 1872)
Baptism Date: 17 MAR 1813
Place West Twyford, Middlesex, England
I checked the IGI for you and found that West Twyford should be in the Ealing Parish (but the IGI does not cover 1813). Maybe someone on the Middlesex board could help you with his parents
Got curious and googled West Twyford and found this
http://westtwyford.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/west-twyford-park-royal.pdf
It tells you just how few people were living in West Twyford in the 1800's.
This might be why it is hard to find James Speirs parents, the earliest census I can access is 1841.

Hi,
I am also researching James Spiers of Karori, Wellington.
Do you have proof of his birth in Ealing. I only found the date of birth by looking at the early
New Zealand Gazettes and they showed his work as a Crier and Librarian for the Wellington Supreme Court and his date of birth, salary.
I also have not been able to find anything about his wife Harriottee Friend. Have you found anything.
I descend from Joseph Frederick Spiers on of the surviving sons.
Thanks
Margaret Stevens
