Title: Joseph Garrett
Post by: cire on Monday 06 October 14 21:20 BST (UK)
I'm looking for the parents, birth date and place of birth for a Joseph Garrett born about 1839 in Oxfordshire.
I have a suggestion that his parents were a Joseph and Sophia Garrett but I cannot find any references to support this.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. Sorry that is'nt the one I'm looking for, Mine went to Australia with his father in the 1850s. No mention of the mother going with them. There is a death of a Sophia Ingrimes!!! Garrett in Banbury in 1850, which I think could be her. The Garretts were part of my son-in-law's family and I'm looking at their history before they emigrated.

I couldn't find the family in 1841 or 1851. I suppose the "born in Oxford" that I have could be wrong.

Hi Eric

For your information according to the Oxfordshire Family History Society (OFHS) Marriage Record Index there are only 4 records of a Joseph GARRET(T) marriage.
The closet to yours is a Joseph who married at Deddington 12 May 1815 but that was to a Sarah Gallaway.

I think the best place to start will be requesting a search (for a small fee) from the OFHS almost completed baptism index, for the baptism (if listed) of you 1839 Joseph.

There are just too many places to look without more solid info.

Good hunting

Eric,

I have had a look at OFHS records but with little success.

The Sophia Ingrimes GARRETT you mentioned was buried at Balscote on 6 December 1850 aged just 8 days.

The closest match I could find for a Joseph GARRETT born in Oxfordshire in 1839 was the Joseph GARRETT, son of William and Esther, baptised in Wardington on 9 August 1840, but he was ruled out in earlier posts. There is another Joseph GARRETT baptised in Wardington on 3 August 1845; this one was the son of James and Harriett.

Thanks for the replies. I think I may have misled you!!!!!! Having looked further at what I was given, I suspect that there is either a mistake in the birth dates or there is a whole generation missing!!!!!!!!!.
I'll try and sort it out and come back on again if I get stuck!!!

Hi Eric ...

Can you tell us what your sources are for his birth year of c1839 in Oxfordshire.  Also, where did the "suggestion" come from regarding his parents?  (Often just knowing what the sources are can help with further research!)

Have you discounted the two Joseph GARRETT births which were registered in Daventry in 1839?  (Daventry is the neighbouring registration district to Banbury.)

Hi Pennie
Thanks for the replies. I have only recently come back to this family after quite a long time and have now lost contact with the person who gave me the information. The Garrett family I am looking at emigrated to Australia. I have Joseph Garrett dying in Victoria in 1899 aged 78, so born in 1821. The notes say "born in Oxford". I also have a marriage for him in 1872, in Australia, when he would have been 51, which is what makes me wonder if there is a generation missing from the notes I have!!! The notes also have his parents as Joseph Garrett and Sophia Welch, but I can't find a marriage for them!!!!!!!
So I'm going to start again!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again

Eric

I know this thread has been going for a long time but I still have interest here and still seeking the same info.
Re date of birth. There is conflicting dates on ages on birth certificates for his children compared to his marriage. Marriage 1872 say was 33 wife 23   and a birth certificate  has ages  in 1890  Joseph 51 and Jane 38  He defiantly died in 1899 and death notice in paper says he was 70 Was from Hadley on Thames Oxfordshire
He arrived in Australia in 1856 aged 23.

This marriage certificate 1872 has his Father as Joseph Garrett and mother Elizabeth maiden name unknown. I have thoughts it could be Bissell

A recent DNA test and retirement have me back on the hunt.

Sophia Welsh is unlikely to be the name of his mother in fact  Welsh is on one of Josephs children's birth certificate it is his mother in-laws surname.  Elizabeth [unknown ] ,Bissell is my guess but looking for confirmation - information

There is too many variations conflicting ages to work out what his DOB is.  There is a Job Garrett born in Oxford shire in 1824 1829  to Joseph and Elizabeth Garrett  in Oxfodshire seen in two census 1841 and 1851 and not after that could be the case due to coming to Aust  in 1856 aged 23.

OK  I have learnt quite a bit more on this matter since my last post.

Mid last year I received a DNA test for my birthday through ancestry.com and then by also joining heritage.com I was able to work through DNA  matches, other family trees and  then on to links which ultimately confirmed Joseph Garrett was born to  JOSEPH GARRETT 1787 - 1840 and Elizabeth Bissell 1786 - 1872

Job [Joseph] Garrett was born in 1831 at Pishill Oxfordshire England with siblings Lucy 1816-1902
Joanna 1818-?  Mary Ann 1822 ?  Augusta 1824 -1861  Sophia Maria 1827-1900 Thomas 1829-1911  Sarah

Joseph came to Australia aboard the Donald McKay  .vicnet.net.au/~murtoa/donald_m.htm
on his own in 1856 arriving in Port Phillip.

Still working on more detail so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Trove newspaper entries for Joseph Garrett in 1899:

The Age (Melbourne, Vic. : 1854 - 1954)  Thu 6 Apr 1899  Page 6
TRARALGON, Wednesday, A magisterial Inquiry was held at Cowwarr on Monday respecting the death of Mr.-Joseph Garrett, aged 78 years. Deceased retired to rest on Saturday night in apparently
good health. About 3.30 a.m. on Monday his wife heard him give a groan, and on raising him up found that he was dead. A verdict of death from failure of the heart's action was returned.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
April 5.
A magisterial inquiry was held here on Easter Monday, before Mr Fogarty, J.P., touching the death of Joseph Garrett, a well-known resident, aged 78 years. It appears he had been complaining lately of not feeling well, and about nine months ago was treated by Dr Boake for heart disease. On Saturday night he took a hearty tea about 6.30 p.m., and retired to rest about 9.30 with his wife and family. An hour later his wife gave him a dose of medicine and a cup of tea, and he then appeared as well as usual. About 3.30 a.m. she heard him give a loud groan and stretch himself. She at once jumped up and raised his head on her arm, and called her son, when it was found he was dead, although quite warm. A neighbour was called in, and her son, William, proceeded to the police station at Toongabbie and gave information to Constable Hall, who with great promptitude went to Cowwarr and examined the body, but could not find any marks of violence. Con. Hall then reported the matter to Mr Fogarty, who ordered an inquiry. Evidence was given that a fortnight ago deceased had asked Mr Martin, head teacher of the State School, to draw up his will, as Dr Boake had told him he might die at any moment. Mr Martin complied with his request, and gave evidence to that effect. After a deal of evidence had been taken, Mr Fogarty returned a verdict that death was due to failure of the heart's action.

Hi Russell,
that's a great connection to have with both you and your wife with heritage to that same family going back a couple of hundred years. You must have a comprehensive history of the Garretts of that era.
To my knowledge there was only Job Garrett of that family that ventured to Australia

Have either of you a Ancestry DNA  test ?
regards David Garrett
