Hi, JMM is a bit of a mystery. Information is quite scarce regarding his origins, so I'm hoping that someone might have a look for a birth for him please. Only info I have is from his marriage in Melbourne Australia in 1922 and in a newspaper article says the following:
" John Miles Mathieson late RAF, second son of the late Reverend James Mathieson of Victoria and Mrs Mathieson of Ontario Canada".
When his wife Phyllis died in 1944, there was a notice in the newspaper in NSW Australia, looking for JMM if he was alive, as he may have had a claim on her property. So it seems that they didn't appear to be together for any length of time after the marriage in 1922 (which I might add there is no official copy of their marriage either). This is one strange story!

It looks as though the above can't be found. I'm starting to think along the lines that everything I know about him may be false including his name and also his war record. This one is definitely in the to hard basket at this time. :-\
Cheers

Can only find the Tasmania, Australia Index to Marriage Notices in the Mercury showing John Miles Mathieson married to Phyllis Williams - 14 October 1922 (Published 9 Dec 1922)
Seems to be well hidden after that ::)

Hi Sandra, yes the newspaper article announcing the wedding is one of two articles that I have found.
Even the wedding - although announced, was not listed in the official Victorian (Aust) BDM's. All very strange. So I will once again leave this one until next time.

Just a few thoughts.
Is it possible that the couple didn't marry in Australia but elsewhere. I did check Free bmd (England) but didn't find anything.
Also, have you looked for the death of JMM's father James in Victoria to see if that could be a lead. I found it interesting that the father died in Victoria and the mother was living in Ontario, Canada. Is it possible that by finding info on the father that might get you closer to finding info on the son.
I checked births in Ontario for the 1890's with a father James and found nothing.
If JMM was in the RAF, his services files may be at Find my Past or at Archives in England. You could search that route as well.
Hope this gives you some more areas to consider.

Hi, I initially thought that the death of the Reverend James was Victoria (Australia), but I think it was Victoria, Canada? Not that it matters much as I couldn't find anything whatsoever. Checked the RAF file and the J M Mathieson wasn't the one I was looking for in Find My Past. Again, no luck. Might have to have a really good look at the Archives of England, but when I did have a quick look, the dates of service men that I was looking for had been sourced to Find My Past.
At Phyllis' death, there was a notice in the newspaper looking for JMM and if he was still alive he may have been entitled to part of her estate. No idea if he was ever found. But she certainly always used the name of "Mathieson". ???

Forgot to add that Phyllis was born in 1877, so JMM may have been born earlier that the 1890's.
