Is anyone researching the Littlewoods from Great Yarmouth, my grandmother (b about 1890) was a member of a large family that split far and wide. I have few records to date other than her father and grandfather were John Littlewood.
I am also looking for the Thompson family and have tracked them back to Joseph Thompson living on Elm Hill in Norwich in the late 1700s. Can anyone extend back further.
For both families there were rumours of a Scottish ancestry but nothing has ever been proven.
-
What was your grandmother's name? I've found a family in Yarmouth on the 1911 census that might fit-John is a master Bootmaker with wife Elizabeth and 6 children -the daughters are Edith, Ethel and Mildred-could this be them?
If not I will look again. Jan

Hi
Just concentrating on the Littlewoods first - what was your grandmothers name? You have given her birthyear. Was she born in Gt Yarmouth or elsewhere
What info do you already have (ie) census/BMD etc so we don't duplicate
-
My grandmother was Edith Mary Littlewood with a birth date of 1888, she was born in Gt Yarmouth and certainly had a sister Ethel, Millie or Mildred has been mentioned but since the name exists of both sides of the family I am not sure which one.
I have unsubstantiated evidence of another John Littlewood as her grandfather, she also had at least two brothers, Sidney who I met, he was a printer, and Ernest who was lost in the Great War.
-
Hi
You will need to lookup the 1911 entry yourself as copyright restrictions mean we are unable to help with details
I don't think Edith was born in 1888

FreeREG is a great resource for Norfolk.
Marriages you can check on there;
JOHN Littlewood 1840 to Mary EVERETT
1851 in Great Yarmouth we have;
John Littlewood 32, Night Watchman, born Filby
Mary Littlewood 34
William Littlewood 10
Mary Ann Littlewood 6
Maria Littlewood 1
1841;
John Littlewood 20
Mary Ann Littlewood 20
Johanna Littlewood 11mths
Now by 1861 John is married to a HANNAH, Hannah R in later Census;
Cant find a Marriage though.
Trees are very mixed up with this so I have tried to sort it out.
John Littlewood 40, Watchman at Silk Factory
Hannah Littlewood 40
William Littlewood 22
Mary Ann Littlewood 18
Maria Littlewood 12
John Littlewood 8
Robert Littlewood 6
Sarah Littlewood 4
Rachel Tice 19
George Tice 16
Sarah Horth 72
All are named as Children of John/Hannah.
Sarah Horth is down as Johns Mother.
BAPTISMS;
St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth;
Rachel Sarah TICE, Parents WILLIAM/RACHEL Tice, Fathers Occp Mariner
George William Taylor TICE, Parents WILLIAM/HANNAH RACHEL Tice, Fathers Occp Sailor
(FreeREG)
MARRIAGE;
20 January 1841, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth
William TICE, Bachelor, Sailor, Father WILLIAM Tice, Farmer
Hannah Rachel TAYLOR, Spinster, Weaver, Father George HORTH, Sailor
(FreeREG)
So Sarah is likely Hannahs Mother.

Hannah Rachel TICE Married George LAWSON, 3 February 1856, Yarmouth, Norfolk, England
(Familysearch.Org)
So did she leave George and that is why no Marriage can be found to John Littlewood?
-
From FreeREG Hannah TICE was a Witness to the Marriage of SAMUEL Horth 1851. His Father was GEORGE Horth Mariner
HANNAH RACHEL Horth Baptised St Nicholas, 29 Oct 1821, Parents GEORGE/SARAH, Fathers Occp Sailor.
SAMUEL JOSEPH TYRELL Horth 01 Oct 1830 same details.
More Children there also.
(FreeREG)
1851 Census
Sarah Horth 62
Samuel Horth 21
1841 Census
Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
Sarah Horth, 50, Silk ?
Robert Horth, 13
Samuel Horth, 10
Hannah TICE, Silk ?
George TAYLOR, 1
OK, Hannah was a busy Girl.
Although 1841 Marriage has her as a Spinster she was married before which explains the Tylor name and George age 1 in 1841 census.
MARRIAGE;
05 June 1838, St Nicholas
Hannah NORTH, Spinster, Beetster, Father GEORGE Horth, Sailor
Samuel TAYLOR, Bachelor, Sailor, Father JAMES Taylor, Sailor
Beetster may be the word I couldnt make out on the 1841 Census.
-
Although I cant find a Marriage I think Sarah was nee TYRELL;
William Robt Tyrrell, Baptised 02 March 1817, St Pauls, Norwich
Parents George HORTH and Sarah TYRELL
Fathers Occp Mariner
Robert Tyrell HORTH, Baptised 31 July 1827 St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth to GEORGE/SARAH
So Robert/Samuel are on the 1841 Census with Mother Sarah and Sister Hannah Rachel
A SARAH Tyrrel was Baptised 01 Nov 1789, St Martin at Palace, Norwich to JAMES/ELIZABETH Tyrrel. Mother nee BULLOCk
(FreeREG)
1851 Sarah Horth is born c 1789 Norwich.
