I am tracing the parents of Ann Robson, born 1795 in Longbenton, Northumberland, who married Benjamin Hall around 1820. Her parents are Ralph Robson and Margaret Carr, whom I hope are also from Longbenton, although I cannot guarantee that.
Ralph and Margaret married on 27th September 1794, according the Longbenton Parish Register on FreeReg, so I presume they were born in the 1765-1774 region.

If you can find any children born to Ralph and Margaret between 1798 and 1812 then their baptism records should give you more parent detail and where they originate from.

I'm finding out a lot, but getting confused with an apparent change of Margaret's maiden name from Carr to Joicey/Jowcey after the first two children. If someone's father died or was disgraced, might they start using their mother's maiden name as their own maiden name for records? I shall dig deeper and deeper!

People changed their names for all manner of reasons but can you be absolutely sure that Margaret Carr and Margaret Joicey are the same person. Unfortunatley Robson is such a common name in these parts that it could possibly be two separate couples.
If they are the same person then perhaps she was married before and one surname is her first married name and the other her maiden name

The first two baptisms (Ann in 1795 and Charles in 1797) don't give Margaret's maiden name?
There is then a change in the way baptisms are recorded in Longbenton, and the next one, Elizabeth in 1798 helpfully tells you that Ralph, a sinker, is a native of Whickham, and his wife Margaret née Jowcey is a native of this parish.
The BT marriage record is a brief one line, and gives only the date and the names of the couple. So you can't see from that whether they are single or widowed.
I think it is likely that Margaret is the Margaret Jowsey who married Thomas Carr at Longbenton on 26 May 1781.
There are four baptisms at Longbenton of children born to Thomas and Margaret Carr of Battle Hill between 1782 and 1787, and a burial of Thomas Carr of Battle Hill, Walker in 1788

Galium, I think you're right. I had found the Margaret Jowsey/Thomas Carr marriage, and was about to look for his possible death when I read your message. Many thanks, and many thanks again for going the extra mile and finding their children's baptisms, and Thomas Carr's burial. I shall have a look at the BT to double-check, as much because it's satisfying to see one's ancestors names in the book, as it were, as anything else.

The change in information was not restricted to Longbenton - it applied to the whole of the Durham Diocese. The new bishop of Durham in 1797 was Shute Barrington and he was an amateur genealogist. His instructions to his parishes was that all baptismal records should contain at least mother’s maiden name and the place where both parents were born. Many contain even more than that. That’s what I was meaning in post no. 3 above. Burial records contain extra detail too.
Alas the standardised records were brought into use in 1813 and the extra detail ended.
I think that you have illustrated (with Gallium's help) that Margaret was born as Jowsey/Joicey and that her first marriage was to Carr. Now that you also have the information that she was born in Longbenton you should be able to trace her baptism.
