Could I please beg the help of Scottish Rootschatters.
I am researching the names on the war memorial at Ludgershall in Wiltshire and need to find information about James PILLANS, Service No 9873, 2nd Bn Wiltshire Regiment.
From 1911 census, he was born Biggar Lanarkshire about 1888.
Can anyone help with 1901 Census, birth registration, parents names, or any other information please.
I have his marriage to Hilda Edwards, Pewsey Reg Office Wiltshire 3 July 1909 - he is shown as a Private in the Cameron Highlanders.
Thank you

Hi
What was his fathers name on the marriage cert
-
In 1901 he is 16yrs old and living with his grandmother Elizabeth Pillans - can't find him at the moment in 1891 but still looking
-
I don't have the marriage certificate itself, but believe father may have also been James.

Mistranscribed as Villans in 1891 - aged 6 and still with grandmother - possibly illegit.
In both 1891 and 1901 there is also another James described as grandson but he was very young if the other James was his son. In 1891 he was 23 and in 1901 33. Occupation slater for comparison to marriage cert

The older James birth possibly

You would need to buy credits on SP to look up the 1885 birth www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Thanks Carole.
Can you tell me where James was living with grandmother age 6 in 1891 and age 16 1901 please? Does he have an occupation in 1901?
The other James doesn't fit - too old.

There is no 1891 or 1901 entry for him with a later birthyear although SP is showing 2 births for that name in Biggar 1885 and the one above found by Ev

Someone posted about this gentleman on one of the Facebook boards today but I can’t find the post now to respond.
James appears to have been born in 1885 in Biggar and as has previously been discovered he was with his Pillans grandmother in 1891 and 1901. In 1911 he is listed as James Nickleson Pillans and living with his wife in Wiltshire.
There is a 1907 Attestation record for a James Pillans born around 1885 in Biggar. He joined the Cameron Highlanders. He was discharged in 1910 following conviction in a civil court for stealing a bicycle. He gives next of kin details as Father John Pillans 10 Freer street, Edinburgh, Mother Helen Pillans, brothers Thomas and John and sister Elizabeth. I had a look at 10 Freer Street in the Valuation Rolls of the period and there is no John Pillans, but there is a John Nicholson listed at that address. I suspect James was illegitimate ( born to one of grandmother Elizabeth Pillans daughters) and his father was John Nicholson ( hence the Nickleson middle name in 1911).

Helen Pillans daughter of James Pillans and Elizabeth Lithgow was born in Biggar in 1865

Helen Pillans married John Nicholson in 1887 in Biggar.
