I am researching Samuel Pitchford. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his part in the sortie to Deh Khoja near Khandahar whilst serving in the 7th Regiment of Foot during the 2nd Afghan War. I am looking for details of his part in this operation.

Hello & welcome.
I take it your man was in the 2/7 Foot ( Royal Fusiliers )
I can't see him in the London Gazette so my advice would be to contact the RF museum who may hold diaries etc.

Hi,
He was 1707 L/Cpl Samuel Pitchford, 2/7th Fusiliers.
The information I have is that his DCM was actually awarded for Maiwand 27/7/80 and the retreat to Kandahar 27-28/7/80 rather than for Dej Khojah

Pitchford's name is amongst those who are recommended for the sortie on the 16th Aug 1880, and separate from the Maiwand recommendations

Interesting.
Abbott mentions Hallett, Harbart, Pitchford and Ross as DCM recipients for the 7th Fusiliers for Maiwand and retreat to Kandahar, and then also Regan, Rhodes and Taylor as recipients for Deh Khojah 16/8/80

Many thanks for the info on Samuel Pitchford. It is clear that he won his DCM for an event during the sortie to Deh Khojah and I have a copy of the Memorandum recommending the award. Abbott is incorrect on this.
