Hello,
Looking for information on my GG Father Frank Rogers into his work as a Dentist in NSW. Where he practiced etc. He married my GG Mother in Townsville in 1901 so I am thinking pre 1900 in NSW. I am also looking at the possibility of my GG Mother being a teacher. I found a Trove doc - New South Wales, Australia, Government Gazettes, 1853-1899 for Miss Margaret McGrath retiring from the Public Service Board as a teacher in 1899. She was teaching at Rhine Falls Public School out near the Snowy Mountains. This may not be our Margaret Ann (Beatrice) McGrath but I have made a few assumptions. Firstly right up until the 1960s women about to marry had to resign from the post of teaching so this may have been a resignation and not a retirement. I believe she lived in a convent and was schooled by the nuns, she would have likely had a good education for the time and possibly an avenue into a teaching Career. In here later life she also ran several busineses which implies she was educated.

Hi Sandy,
You are correct about married women having to resign from the public service when marrying.
However, I have found one of my (married) ancestors dying aged in her 50s and still working as a teacher. This was around 1910 or so.
I have always wondered if the rules were different pre WWI. Perhaps the resignation rules came in later.
Someone else on this forum may know the answer.

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/professions-and-occupations/teacher-rolls-1868-1908
“Many people have teachers in their family. The Teachers' rolls, 1869-1908 (NRS 4073) are one of most useful sources for researching individual teachers in the later half of the nineteenth century. They provide a service record for each teacher and include date of birth, examination results, appointments, promotions and date of resignation. The index contains 14, 867 entries.”

There are instances in my own family (NSW western division) where the female teacher remained teaching after her marriage, especially where it was in a rural locality, and the head teacher was her husband…… These instances were both before and after WWI. I am not sure what would have occurred if these women were in a metropolitan public school, and none were teachers at High Schools. There's two entries at the index linked above, by the name of Margaret McGarth. That index covers 1869 to 1908.
ADD
I just checked the index again, this time entering only "Mrs" (in the remarks column) and leaving the other options blank.... Pages and Pages of returns for Mrs, some giving the married name and not just the maiden name.

What was your GG Mother's occupation as per her marriage certificate?

Married women had to resign as a permanent officers but could be employed as a temporary. My aunt worked as a temporary clerk in the same position as civilian support for the RAN for 40 years. In the early 70s I was unable to be a permanent teacher ion NSW as I would not agree to be sent anywhere in NSW.

I am wondering whether sandyfeet is getting reply notifications.
The information from the certificates as requested by majm would be help if further assistance in this query is needed.
It is difficult to track anyone in a family history search when all information held by the Original Poster is not fully shared.
It would also be of benefit if previous links were listed including the ones on the UK board.
Here is one of them

Why do you think this, Sandy?
Worth noting for general interest that between 1899 and 1900 three women named Margaret McGrath married in NSW. One or none of them could have been a resigned teacher ;D
Observation ::) ::)
It's a long way from Rhine Falls to Townsville
