Where are they living in Scotland do you have them in the census forms maybe if you let us know where they are we could help ...If William was in Scotland and still living after 1855 you can search for his death on Scotlands People and that will give you his parent's names .
-
that is everything I have on them im absoluty stuck
-
Do you not have anything on Ann Marshall who married Robert Stevenson if this is your direct line ?do you have births for this family which would give us an idea of a date range :)

Maybe you should try for a marriage for Mary Jane Marshall married 7/4/1857 Calton Glasgow to Peter McDavitt to see if her parents were still alive on Scotlands People ...Cant see a marriage so far for Ann and Robert Stevenson see a birth for daughter Sarah 1863 Clyde Glasgow
-
Mary Jane's husband was also a shoemaker they are in Edinburgh in the 1881 census transcription error name McDarrit ..Robert Stevenson aged 13 with them ( nephew )
Should have added also a niece Ellen Kirkwood born Glasgow 1876

ann marshall ,s husbands parents as Robert Stevenson and margeret Kirkwood ann,s hubby also Robert

Not seeing them around in the 1851 census will keep looking :)

thinking on it Im sure that the mother of ann and mary mother died in a workhouse I see this from the family reunited page years ago should have kept it or jotted it all down

Was that in Scotland ? as I said you would be better to get the marriage certificate for her daughter and that would let you know if they were still living :)

Hi all ,
Tjtree , I've merged your Ireland & Scotland posts to prevent duplication.
I think the answers to your questions are more likely to be found in Scotland.
If you get any further back you can always repost on the Ireland board.

Hello Tjtree,
Here is whom i think is your family on the 1861. census, in Glasgow.
William Marshall, Head, M. age 57 years, M. Shoemaker, born Ireland,
Mary Marshall, Wife, M. age 55 years, F. born Ireland,
Sarah Marshall, Daug, Un. age 20 years, F. Cotton Factory Worker, born Ireland,
Ann Marshall, Daug, Un. age 15 years, F. Cotton Factory Worker. born Ireland,
Margaret Marshall, age 5 years, born Lanark, Glasgow.
Address 109 Bridgegate Street, Clyde, Glasgow.
Now here is the interesting part, the young Margaret Marshall, aged 5 years on this census, was born 4/February/1856. Clyde, Glasgow, to parents William Marshall, Shoemaker Journeyman, and a Mary Cartmall, the address 80 Bridgegate Street, Clyde, Glasgow.
The only problem i see is the age of Mary Cartmall/Cartmill, is 55 years on the census, meaning she was about 50 years of age at the birth of young Margaret.
The father William Marshall, registered young Margaret's, birth he made his mark with a x. donating he could not write.
Regards,
Jonn.
Ps. the family were most certainly in the Clyde District Glasgow, as the first five birth of Ann Marshall, and Robert Stevenson, were in the Clyde District Glasgow, so also was Ann Marshall's, daughter Sarah Marshall's, birth also in Clyde District, before she and Robert Stevenson, got together.
-
that's outstanding thank you
-
I dint even know about sarah marshall existence until you found them thank you

Hello Tjtree,
The biggest problem with the Marshall's, is their ages vary so much on records, in the 1861 census i provided earlier William, is aged 57 years, Mary, is aged 55 years. By 1871. William, is aged 62 years, and Mary, is aged 63 years, living at same Address, 80 Bridgegate Street.
William Marshall, died 29/March/1879. aged 67 years, at the City Poorhouse, St. Rollox, although it stated on his death certificate his usual residence was 80 Bridgegate Street, he was married to Mary Cartmill. His occupation Master Shoemaker.
His parents were Richard Marshall, Linen Weaver, Deceased, his mother was Sarah Marshall, maiden name McKie, Deceased.
William Marshall, suffered from Bronchitis for four years. His death was registered by wait for it his son John Marshall, who made his mark by a x.
So at this point William Marshall, and wife Mary Cartmill, had five known children John, Sarah, Maryann, Ann, and Margaret.
You can now see where the name Sarah, came from his mother Sarah McKie.
Regards,
Jonn.

Hello Tjtree,
When Ann Marshal Stevenson, died 1878, her children were split up between different factions of the family which other posters have supplied the information.
Well here is your David Stevenson, living with his uncle in 1881.
Address 88 1/2 Louden Street, Glasgow.
John Marshall, Head Shoe Maker, M. aged 40 years M. born Ireland,
Elizabeth Marshall, Wife, Seamstress, M. aged 40 years, F. born Ireland,
Patrick Marshall, Son, aged 15 years, M. born Ireland,
David Stevenson, Nephew, aged 15 years, M. born Glasgow, Lanark.
The above address is very close to Bridgegate,
The above John Marshall, is the son who registered his father William Marshall's, death.
John Marshall, and his wife Elizabeth, also had a Daughter Sarah Marshall.
Regards
Jonn.,

jesus that's so much thank you
so much
-
Hello tjtree,
I sent you a message via this site regarding William Marshall's, death certificate.
Regards,Jonn.
-
someone said here john that Williams parents were Robert marshall and mary clerke shall I disregaurd this as you seem to have found the family
-
Hello tjtree,
I think the person who gave the parents as Robert Marshall, and Mary Clerke, were speculating as Irish Records, for the period concerned early 1800s are very scant and rare.
The point to remember is the surname of William Marshall's, wife Cartmill, very rare in Scotland, its almost impossible that there are two William Marshalls, living in Scotland, with a wife called Mary Cartmill.
Williams, death certificate names his wife as Mary Cartmill.
Regards,
Jonn.

I make you right there john ur a absolute star for what you have found

William Marshall and Mary Cartmill are my Great, Great, Great, Grandparents. Mary's parents are John Cartmill and Mary Troughton From Ireland, the Cartmills owned farmland in Armagh, Ireland. William and Mary had Mary Jane Marshall, who married Patrick McDivitt in Glasgow, but they must have lived in Edinburgh, where their daughter Agnes McDivitt was born, (my Great grandmother) Agnes McDivitt married 3 times, before she died age 41 in 1922. 1st James Morrison and had 2 sons, then 2nd James Cummiskey and had 4 children, 3 living to adulthood, Hugh, Agnes and Mary, plus their half siblings James and Johnny Morrison. then Archibald McGregor. Agnes Cummiskey was my grandmother born in Edinburgh in 1908, married my grandfather James Casey and had my dad James Casey in 1934 - 1990. I was born in Glasgow in 1959...
