There are numerous mentions of T & A JONES and cargo from Melbourne to Adelaide in the Adelaide newspapers.
This newspaper item relates to the late Thomas JONES and his brother Andrew JONES who were in business as general dealers in Adelaide.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01a37/
The case came on upon bill and answers of the defendants, Andrew Jones, Elizabeth Elliot, and Andrew Thomas Jones. Thomas Jones died in February, 1862, and letters of administration were granted to his wife, now Mrs. Elliot, on the 25th July, 1862.
From the Biographical Index of South Australians
JONES Thomas. Parent John born c1827 SAL ENG
Died 2 Feb 1862 Adelaide SA.
Buried West Terrace Cemetery.
Occupation Storekeeper
Lived Adelaide
Religion Church of England.
Married 18 Apr 1853 Blakiston SA Elizabeth nee EDWARDS, born 13 Feb 1834 Oswestry SAL ENG parents Thomas and Elizabeth. Remarried ELLIOTT
Children Andrew Thomas, 1853-, Richard 1855, Henry Edwards 1857-, Charles Wm 1858- and Frederick Arthur 1861-1909
You state you have documents suggesting that Andrew was the elder. What documents other than passenger lists?

I am seeking a Thomas and Andrew Jones who came to NZ from England via Australia. Both Thomas and Andrew are buried in the Waikouaiti cemetery. They both travelled to NZ from Australia in 1861. The information I have from death, marriage, children's birth certificates, etc., indicate that they were close to the same age with Andrew probably 1 yr older than Thomas. Thomas never married, as far as I know, he died in 1869 and Australia is mentioned on his headstone.
I am looking at the possibility that the Thomas and Andrew who travelled on the Condor 10 1850 are the same Thomas and Andrew who came to NZ in 1861.

Yes I have read all your requests on rootschat and posted the above information as it would appear that the SA Thomas and Andrew Thomas JONES, brothers who were in business together, are not your people of interest.
If you decide to make another request please link this and other past requests to save members doing duplicate searching.
Cheers :)

Hi there,
May I gently ask again for the information on the marriage certificate and/or the Intention to Marry for the marriage in New Zealand for your Andrew. Who were the witnesses, what information is recorded on either of those documents about your Andrew?
When you say re Thomas who died in 1869, "Australia is mentioned on his headstone", what does the headstone actually say? Do you have a printout for that death registration? Does it make a mention of "how long in the colony?", if so, what was the answer. And who was the informant?
Is this the same chap as per the NZ Evening Post, Vol V, Issue 71, 5 May 1869 "DEATH on the 4th inst., at his residence, Taranaki street, Mr Thomas Jones, aged 35 years" and also "NOTICE. The Friends of the late Thomas Jones are respectfully invited to attend his Funeral, which will leave his late residence, Taranaki street at 3:30 pm on Friday next, 7th instant. Gascoine & Parsons, Undertakers"
There were three death registrations at NZ BDM online index for a Thomas JONES in 1869. One was aged 20, another was 33 and the other was 35.

In answer to your questions please note the following.
The Intention to Marriage details are:
Andrew Jones, Bachelor, Carrier, aged 26, resides Waikouaiti, 2 years residency.
Mary Gunn, Spinster, aged 23, resides Waikouaiti, 14 years residency.
Marriage details are:
Dated 30 December 1863
Andrew Jones, age 26, carrier, bachelor, usual residence Waikouaiti, no birthplace recorded.
Mary Gunn, aged 23, Spinster, usual residence Waikouaiti, no birthplace recorded.
Witnesses to Marriage: Charles Hubbard and Charles McGregor.
(Charles Hubbard operated a grocery business in Sowburn in 1965. Sowburn is located inland from Waikouaiti some distance away). (Other information suggests that his grocery store was named "Sowburn")
(Charles McGregor was a farmer in the Waikouaiti/Palmerston area. He died in 1908).
Thomas Jones
Death notice in Otago Daily Times 31 August 1869 reads:
On the 28th August, at his residence, Corner Bush, Merton, Mr Thomas Jones, aged 33 years, deeply regretted.
Merton is about five miles south of Waikouaiti
Thomas’ headstone reads:
In memory of Thomas Jones, died 28 August 1869, aged 33 years", and a fairly lengthy piece of wording "Blessed are the dead............................end in large reward".
The council record shows that the plot was purchased by "Jones" and the headstone was by "Marsh, Roat & Co Melbourne".
(Thomas is the only person buried in the plot).
I have ordered a copy of the death registration but as yet have not received it.
A Thomas and Andrew Jones travelled from Australia to Otago aboard the "Aurifera" arriving August 1861. The date matches the 2 years residency noted on the Intention to Marry details.
regards and thanks

I thought it mentioned Australia ???
he died in 1869 and Australia is mentioned on his headstone.

Hi JM
I have to plead guilty to the error. I have checked my records and notes and I have failed to distinguish between what is recorded on the headstone and what is recorded in the council records. I will need to go back and check again. Unfortunately the cemetery and the council records are at the other end of the country and it will be some time before I am down that way again. (I am relatively new to all this and am slowly learning to not only record the information but also clearly record the source details as well.)
However if the headstone came from Marsh, Roat & Co Melbourne, it would indicate that there is some link between Thomas and Australia.
thanks for your assistance and interest

It is of course possible that the stone mason was a well known supplier of headstones to New Zealand.

Your comment is quite correct, I was previously unaware of that piece of information and will need to keep it in mind.
Essie
The family had always understood that Andrew came from Australia, this understanding was supported by Andrew's death registration which noted Sydney as his place of birth, the informant being Henry, Andrew's eldest son. However a copy Mary Christina's (Andrew's daughter) has been obtained and this shows Andrew's birth place as "near Plymouth, Devonshire, England". In that Andrew himself is noted as the informant on the birth registration, the thinking now is that he came from England to New Zealand via Australia.
Many thanks to you both for your interest.

This makes about as much sense as concluding that, if someone owns a Steinway piano, they must be a german.
