				Hi all

Joined up after spotting a post from someone about direct line of my family. Been looking into my family history for many years now and stuck on all but one line.

If anyone can help into tracking some Irish descendants who immigrated to Leeds, West Yorks in late 19th/early 20th century that would really be appreciated. Name is Keeley/Keelighan; in particular, name of interest is Julia Keelighan who married Fred Marshall in Leeds. Her mother was Mary Keeley, born in Ireland but census records don't indicate where. On marriage record Julia's name is Keelighan but on one of her children's birth record it is down as Keeley, so there is potential for a name change or two making it more difficult.

 Thanks

				Hi

Can you provide some dates for the events mentioned please

Marriage year for Fred & Julia and her birthyear & birthplace

Do you have that marriage cert - what was her fathers name?

Her mother was Mary Keeley, born in Ireland but census records don't indicate where.
What was her birthyear and is she on the 1911 census as that should show her full birthplace.  Or did she die before 1911?

Just found the marriage - 1895 Leeds.  He was Frederick not Fred Marshall

 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/2D1D-WGD

YorkshireBMD shows it as a registry office/registrar attended marriage so it was probably in a Catholic church

1901 shows her as Jane aged 74 so she was 47 when she had Julia who is shown as 27 b Leeds
-
				Hi Carole

My fault - sorry I shortened it down, also Julia's mother was Jane, not Mary (getting mixed up)

I have Jane Keeley as mother, Julia Keelighan as daughter with a brother called Patrick. On 1901 census, Jane and Patrick move in and live with Frederick and Julia.

Julia's age is 27, so born around 1874 (says Leeds and is consistent). Patrick's age is 25 putting him circa 1876 born in Leeds. Jane's age is 74, born in Ireland, so looking at circa 1827 for her year of birth.

We can't find birth records for Julia or Patrick in Leeds with the name Keeley or Keelighan. There is a Patrick Keelichan but I'm torn between this being a spelling error and it's him or whether it is just someone else.

Have you found Julia and Patrick in 1881/1891 as I can't see an entry

No, nothing sadly. Nothing for Jane either. I've tried many connotations of spelling their name too just to make sure it's not me.

				Hello,

 1881   4515/56 /20

Jane Callighan 46 yrs County Clare, Ireland

With several children - the two youngest are Julia and Patrick  :)

1871 Samuel and Jane Colligan with children

 Heywood

				Hi Heywood

Thanks for that - just taken a look and that's the best lead I've had. Amazing - providing it is them - how their surname has evolved and changed!

But really appreciate the help with that. We've been wondering about this for months seemingly likely never to find anything!
-
				1861. 3382 / 55 / 11

 Sam Kelcher 30 ys
 Jane  Kelcher 24 yrs
 John Kelcher 3 yrs
 Thomas Kelcher 1 month

It is difficult to see how the surnames could be misheard - although Colligan/ Callighan and Keelighan are very similar.

-
I can only presume they didn't know how to spell their name and so just guessed or the enumerator just guessed.

Can't find a death record for Sam/Samuel, though, from my searching.
-
Hi can only locate at present on Family Search problem with FindMyPast 1871:-

 Samuel Calligan 38
 Jane 35
 John 13
 Thomas 11
 Mary Ann 7
 Bridget 0

Or has this already been located
Ahh a modified post by Heywood!

I did modify it straight away keyboard - sorry  :)

Although I am sure the census entries found are correct, in view of the wide variation in spelling, it may be an idea to buy a copy of the 1895 marriage cert just to confirm that her father was Samuel.

Very good advice  :) it could all be totally wrong!

A possible birth could be Julia Callaghan March quarter 1873

				Hi all

 Thanks for the help above.

Have received marriage certificate and lists father's name as Samuel Keelighan (deceased). So can assume that between 1881 and 1895 he died.

Having checked the birth dates of the other children in the family along with Julia's name, the majority tie up with having a consistent surname of "Callaghan" (except Michael who may be born as Callagham)

Can't seem to find the family in 1891 census to confirm the exact time that Samuel died and have checked both previous address from 1881 census and also the address Julia was living on at the time of her marriage.

 Thanks

Glad that you are a bit further at least.

 I can't see the family in 1891 either  :-\
-
At least it fills in some gaps but means more difficult to track both sides of the family here.

The common name of Marshall means that there are plenty of people with both Frederick's name and also his father's name of Thomas (who is also dead by 1895). Despite this, it's hard knowing which one is him, and finding the marriage record too.

In terms of Samuel and Jane - both were born in Ireland apparently with all kids born in Leeds. Again, hard to know if they were married in Ireland (and exactly what their name was) or whether married in Leeds.
-
If they are the Kelcher family of 1861, the two older children were born in Ireland. Although other censuses state Leeds.
1881 has Jane born in County Clare. A child's birth certificate would give you her name.
