Title: O'Donnell family from Mayo
Post by: joan on Wednesday 17 September 14 14:58 BST (UK)
Does anyone have any information regarding a family by the name of O'Donnell who lived in Westport, Mayo.   The family lived in the Louisburgh area and in Carrowmacloughlin, Kinknock and Belclare.  There was a Patrick O'Donnell born 1851 and who married a Mary Kitterick in Louisburgh.  Does any of the above sound familiar to anyone?

Hi before we get going can I ask you a question you say your father was Desmond O'Donnell and his father was a Thomas, that is fine it is exactly what I have found but do you know about your grandfather's brother Richard? do you know who is married?  It might seem a strange question but it could answer not only my query but a couple of other peoples also.  Joan  PS I think we should perhaps go to personal messages as we will be giving out quite a lot of family info.  I will send you a message from there together with my e mail address if that is easier.  Joan

Hi, I know this is a very old question but I came across this thread in a google search.  Sara O'Donnell (Gavin) is my grandmother and listed on her death certificate was her mother Mary Kittredge and father as Patrick O'Donnell on her death certificate,  Same for her sister Katherine (Kate) who lived with her in Boston..  I am certain the family listed in the 1901 Census is her.  It looks as though the family may have fallen on hard times between 1901 and 1911 - my grandmother Sarah lived with her sister Mary Anne at that time and shortly after that Mary Anne was institutionalized.  I cannot find a trace of their other sister Bridget or where their parents (Patrick and Mary O'Donnell) ended up.  My grandmother and her sister Katherine came to Boston in 1920. From what I am told from those who knew her, neither would ever discuss their time in Ireland. I know this isn't much of a help, I was just so happy to find this thread.

Certainly looks like it, heywood  :D

She died of phthisis contracted five years previously, and her daughter Bridget (see 1901 - reply #7) was the informant.

Trying to find info on my maternal grandfather's family - I know Bridget Delia O'Donnell was born in Westport in 1852 to James O'Donnell (c1829-1899) and Anne Casey (c1831-c1870). She immigrated to the US in 1867, married Jonas Leander Waffle in 1874.  Other than their names and approximate lifespans, I have zero information on her parents, James and Anne.  Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or any direction for that matter!  Thank you!!

Welcome to Rootschat, Donna.

Firstly, if your research is not connected to those named in this thread, it would be best to post as a separate thread.
If you click on ‘report to moderator’ and ask, it can be moved if necessary.

Secondly, where is your evidence that Bridget is from Westport and with those parents?
I can see a tree -maybe yours- with Bridget b Westport and siblings b Cavan.
This is the first one born under civil registration- Margaret, 1865, father James, a clothier.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1865/03551/2307278.pdf

There are other records supported by parish/civil records but others have no supporting evidence.

It would be good to post that which you are sure of, re Irish records, for Bridget.

This baptism fits with Cavan.
1st February 1852 - Bridget with parents James and Ann Casey
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634810#page/128/mode/1up

Other baptisms in the same parish - Urney
Michael, 7th December 1853
Joannam (Joahanna or Jane or similar) 23rd December 1855

Interestingly, the tree shows Bridget’s birth as 3rd February 1852

I am hoping that this is your family. I have based it on some of the research in that tree but you will need to check it out.
Newspaper article (can only see a snippet re this marriage) Mary, eldest daughter of Mr James O’Donnell , November 1870
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1870/11403/8187200.pdf

Another snippet re this marriage Michael O’Donnell and Mary Ann Morrow
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1877/11150/8084185.pdf

There are a couple of snippets December 1877/January 1878 indicating that Mr James O’Donnell might be involved with taking over a ‘Post Car’ establishment.
This might then be James’ death - 1894
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1895/05930/4683975.pdf

There is an entry in the Will Calendar - 1895
http://www.willcalendars.nationalarchives.ie/search/cwa/home.jsp
James O’Donnell - executor, John O’Donnell, watchmaker and jeweller.

Is any of this helpful, Donna?
I wonder what you think of it - especially the birth of Bridget and death of James which are different to those in the tree.

Thank you. I truly appreciate your assistance. It seems I will have to continue the research based on your information as I had little to none. Only what I had gathered from a great aunt’s information on that side. Bridget would be my 2x great grandmother. Thank you again.

Oh that’s good.
She does fit in with that family and if you are sure of some of them it looks favourable.
I have tried to search back a bit but not much luck yet.
I think, if I recall, a Margaret O’Donnell was a witness to the marriage and you could look at godparents to see if there are any helpful names.
It might be best to get your part of the thread moved as a separate one. It might get noticed more then. Just click on ‘report to moderator’ indicating your first post.

I was wrong re Margaret O’Donnell being a witness to the marriage - sorry.
She was a Godparent to Mary - June 1850.
Some of the Mullingar baptisms have been transcribed but are also there in the parish records.
This one, on Ancestry, is just Donnell but you can see it is Mary.
