Title: Where can I find Forms BD1 & BD3 - enquiry held in France 1924
Post by: annie24b on Sunday 14 September 14 17:55 BST (UK)
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, my grandfather died in hospital in Bordeaux 17 June 1924. On the crew agreement , the British consulate in Bordeaux has noted
" an enquiry was held and results reported on the usual forms BD1 & BD3"

does anyone know whether it is possible to find copies of these please?

thanks

Annie

Hi Annie

Here is the NAs research guide for Merchant Seaman - http://nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/merchantseamanafter1917.htm

thanks Ken. I have the crew list and log book for the ship he was on when he died, and also his CR1 & CR2 and medal card. I was just wondering whether there would be  copy of the enquiry into his death. I've googled BD1 & BD3 but no clues as to what /where they would be

It would have been a rare event so I think you need a specialist researcher. The link I sent you mentions the archive in Southampton. Also these people - http://www.mun.ca/mha/about.php. To these you can add the Maritime Museum in Liverpool, who should have a research service.

If you are searching for information such as cause of death you may find his death certificate on Findmypast under Consulate or maritime deaths. A hit means that the certificate is available from the UK GRO.

Thank you Ken,
I have his death certificate,  and details of his death and burial from the log book, which I bought from the Newfoundland people.
It was only idle curiosity about the enquiry forms, which were mentioned in the log book by the consulate.
What I would really like would be to find is his grave. A couple of years ago I asked the manager of the cemetery where he was buried (Bordeaux) whether the grave was still there. I was really excited when he sent me details and attached a photo of the grave .....but the photo was of a different person entirely, and when I queried this he replied that there was no record of him - even though the first reply gave name, date of death and grave position.
I have tried asking on ancestry boards for someone in France to take a look for me, but no luck.
don't think I'll ever find it now   :'(

If you have not asked the Newfoundland Archives the direct question about BD1 etc, I would go back to them.
