Title: Cheshire Asylum, Upton by Chester
Post by: delta59 on Friday 12 September 14 13:20 BST (UK)
Hello

Sadly my GG Granddad was incarcerated in the above asylum and eventually died there in 1893.  I am trying to find any information I can about why he was put in there.  Does anyone know how I go about it?

The records for the Asylum are held by Cheshire and Chester Local Studies see http://archive.cheshire.gov.uk/CalmView/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&id=Z+HW&pos=7

Hi Delta,
If it's not any trouble I would be really interested in the reply you receive from Cheshire Records Office.
Earlier this year I contacted them enquiring about an ancestor who had been in Macclesfield Parkside Asylum. I was told that I might want to wait as they were busy digitising Asylum records with a view to putting them on line later in the year.
As there wasn't any great rush I decided to wait.
I can't locate the email they sent to me but I'm fairly sure they were starting 1877 to the early 1900s.
I phoned them just a couple of weeks ago to see if things had changed and was again informed that they would be on line before the end of the year.
So it will be interesting to see if they tell you the same thing.

Thanks for that.  That is very interesting and I hope they are digitized eventually.  I shall let you know what they say.

The Parkside Asylum Casenote Records 1873-1900 went online 2 weeks ago.  They are a fantastic resource for family historians.

Thanks for that Catmad,

Cheshire RO advised me that they would be on line 10th October on their website which I took to mean the Search and Shop web site.
Despite having a look every day since I haven't spotted them.
Could you please post the web address.

Many Thanks

Think you gave us that in one of your posts.
I should have taken more notice. :)

Hi all

Before I wade through 17,000 records do I assume Cheshire Asylum, Upton by Chester is not Parkside?

Del

It is a shame Del, you've been waiting for such a long time.
I honestly thought that thay were going to upload all Cheshire Asylum Records not just Macclesfield.
Hopefully they will get round to the others soon.

Hi Del,

Sorry about the late reply I've not been on line for a couple of days so only just read your post.
Yes, I was fortunate and found the record I needed.
Thanks for asking and I hope Upton will be digitised soon.

They are free to view and can be searched by name. I'm using them for my MSc thesis in Genealogy.

For information my research has shown that many patients were transferred from Upton to Parkside and sometimes went back again. It may be worth checking the Parkside records to see if this happened to your ancestor.
Parkside was actually built as an overspill to accommodate the growing numbers at Upton in the 1870s.
