Hello,
My mother's side are Thompsons - as far back as I can go (1791) they seemed to be home birds and lived in the Middleton in Teesdale area.
I'm looking for a branch of the line I think born around 1900. The siblings were John ( every generation had a John), Mary who I think was a school teacher and Peggy (poss Margaret).
Peggy married a Sewell Race, who was a farmer in the same neck of the woods. I visited them in the late 60s early 70s and they were about retirement age as far as I recall.
Sewell seems to be a more common surname , possibly of Jewish origins and Race my be short for Horace. Sewell also seems to pop up as a middle christian name too.
I've searched for all the perms but still no joy, I felt sure he would pop up.
I wonder if anyone has an alternative interpretation on an unusual name.
Thanks,
Irish.

Just to clarify Race is the surname and Sewell is the first name?
There are a couple of marriages Sewell Armitage Race in Ashton 1890/1907 but not to Thompson ladies.
How about this one Margaret Thompson to William S Race 1939 - is that the right time period?

Hi,
We were always told he was Sewell Race. Marriage may not be until circa 1920.
My spelling is based on phonetics rather than any written evidence.
Peggy's father may have been John Thompson born abt. 1864.
Thanks.

How about this for his birth:
William S Race

Maybe Sewell was his middle name :-\

2002 Electoral Roll has a Sewell Race living at Carlbury Hall, Darlington, which is a nursing home.

Folks,
Dates are a bit later than I was expecting but they would certainly fit the bill in other respects.
I am increasing of the view Sewell was indeed a middle name, one of those surnames taken as a middle name in a previous generation.
The dates would certainly exclude a census find.
Thanks.

Folks,
Those dates would possibly change Margaret's father to either William, George or possibly Joseph.
A birthday of 1912 would make Sewell about 60 when I met him - that's about spot on.
Thanks - amazing responses folks.

Folks,
It seems I may have almost found the Race Farmers, one in Butterknowle near Staindrop and the other in Whorlton a bit further west. Originally poultry farmers, it seems they are still in the farming business.
Thanks again for everyone's input.
