I can't seem to upload it... It's been half an hour and it still hasn't uploaded. It is 3.5 MB... Is that too large?

Hi dafadowndilly, is there anything on the back. Here are the dates David Whyte, the photographer, was at various addresses.

Hi, I don't know if there is anything on the back as I got it from a relative whom I am no longer in touch with and the original is with her.

PS thank you for the link, it makes interesting reading to get the background history of the photographer.

Had a go - just for starters.

I think the boy has his boots on the right feet - but I can't be sure.     ;)

I was just going to comment on his boots, Wiggy!

Bless him, I reckon they were too big and/or on the wrong feet. No wonder he looked so unhappy ;D

Hi again

I've not done anything fancy.  One reduced to fit RCs window.

How odd - now on my laptop and they're showing a very strange purple colour cast in the shadows. Not showing on my main machine  :-\ :-\ :-\

It could be the laptop as the graphics are being funny.

Will convert to black and white and attach to this message.

Thank you so much everyone... what a fantastic job you have done  ;D ...

Re the sizing, can I use one of these pictures as a template in Photoshop in order to get the right format for uploading... I know I was directed to a "how to" link but I haven't quite got the hang of that yet...

Also I have been looking at the boys odd stance... do you think he is standing with his legs crossed?

That's what I thought, even if his boots are a few sizes too big, I think he's standing with his legs crossed. Gorgeous children. :)

See what you mean, but I don't think so - surely one of his toes would be a bit pointed if this were the case.     :-\ ;)

When I resized your scan DDD, I just kept reducing the longest side a little bit at a time until the info was showing just under 500kbs.

Try doing that with your original and see if you can understand what I mean.  (Not very good at explaining things.)

Hi...My contribution and I think he has his left leg crossed over his right, still its a wonderful photo. Now I'm having a second thought, I now think he doesn't have his legs crossed.

For a date, 1870s by the furniture. Prior to mid-decade the photo corners were square, then after that they became rounded to make it easier to slide them in and out of album pockets. These look rounded, but I think they were cut post-production...the upper left corner still seems to be square. Also the boy seems to be in a posing stand, visible behind him...this disappeared about mid decade. So I would say early 1870s.

Cheers,
China

I believe shoes could be both same shape in the past, no left and right. If this is 1870's could be a late example. These are not rich kids, so maybe.

Though they look peculiar, the way the shoes are buttoned looks as if they are on the correct feet.   ;)
