Welcome from me too, Jacka
Can I suggest that you contact the moderator (click on that bit in your post) and ask for this to be transferred to the Australia board?
Records for aboriginal people are notoriously difficult.
You say you don't know when he was born, but as you know where he died, can you give us any sort of date for this, and how old he was?
Have you contacted any of the relevant agencies in W.A. for help with this?

Could this be your Darby?

OBITUARY
Residents of this district and the cattle punching fraternity particularly, will regret to learn of the death of erstwhile stockman and station owner, John C. Mathews - Jack, one of this district's earliest cattlemen, with four brothers (all deceased) took up country known, or rather named by them, as Walgun, Tallawanni and Watch Point stations, situated beyond Ethel Creek in an easterly direction, some 35 to 40 years ago.
Old timers speak of Jack as being the doyen of bushmen, and as having a greater knowledge of the so-little-known territory bordering the desert out east than any other man.
Big in stature, jovial, and good company at all times, Jack will be missed and mourned by many in these parts.

My grandmother, Josephine is the daughter of Julia Darby. Julia and Joseph had 5 children - Hazel, Ethel, Joan, Keith and Josephine. They grew up in East Perth.
Julia died of Lead Poisoning..
I too am searching for info on Julia and where they originated from, as the story is, that once Julia and Minnie's mum passed away the girls were taken by an uncle (but now I'm thinking it was their step father) to Balfour Downs.
Thanks for all the info everyone shared with AustralianJack as this has helped me too :)

Hi Jaime,
I've been searching for some info on Julia Holliway as well. Julis was my Great Grandmother, Joan was my Grandmother. It is very difficult to find any sort of information on the family before Julia and Minnie. This thread has given me a lot more information to follow up and add to my collection.
Have you managed to find anything else over the last few months?
I have more information at home filed away that I will dig up and add here in the next few weeks.

I have this photo in my phone that came from my Aunty. It is a photo of Julia Holliway, no sure of a year or location unfortunately.

Hey, i am the grate grandaughter of Julia Darby, she had another child Margaret Hanbury (nee Darby) when she was very young who was taken from her only months after she was born. We know of nans (Margaret) sisters - Ethal and Hazel who she was lucky enough to meet in her life, my mum has met a few of their family. I believe everyone else had already passed by the time she found them. I have a photo of the 3 of them, will never forget that day as a young girl, i will dig it out. They bought with them the picture of Nan Julia but that is all we have of her. For us it has been very difficult as Nan was taken and never a part of the family as such, she only found everyone in her late 50s. We still dont know who Nans father is. Any info would be amazing and ill keep track of the post.

Kaya from Southern Yamaji Country.
I am not aware of any aboriginal family but my surname is DARBY
I had a DNA test that did not find any aboriginal bloodlines
An indigenous friend said sometimes mob used the surname of the person they worked for.
The name Darby suddenly appeared in several places in the UK, originally it meant 'dear park' but came to be associated with racing and hats.
My Great great grandfather Thomas William Hunter Darby was born in 1816 in Deal, England at around the time when shipping trade moved to London. His father stole money from an employer and hanged himself in jail before the trial. Young Thomas was one of eleven siblings with no income. He probably joined a ship crew aged about nine and deserted as a teenager in the tropics, eventually taking a land grant in Horsham, Victoria. Horsham is close to where an Aboriginal family started using the surname Darby. He spent two years in prison for sexual assault of his ten year old daughter Sarah and another girl Elizabeth Norton. Possibly there were illegitimate children or just people used his name. Anyway my family tree is here https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Darby-Family-Tree-2163
If you can see any connections I would be very happy to hear about them.

Hello All, over the past few years I have been researching DNA links from Nana Julia and Minnie's family who have an account on myheritage.com and Ancestry.com, from those I have been able to find that we have found the father for Julia and Minnie who happens to be Bill Coffen who was born at Millstream? Also the father of William Coffin who was born at Roy hill 1903. The mother we have still yet to connect
