Hi all
I have lost an ancestor! Edward Tindal Ferdinand Harbottle Hogg, born 16 September 1880, baptised 14 November 1880 in Berwick-upon-Tweed. But that is about the last time it appears he used all names. Parents John Skinner Hogg (1844-1889) and Elizabeth Hartill (1840-1899). Enlisted in the Kings own Scottish borderers as Edward Hogg and I have the army service records. Two service numbers - 3613 (when he was 17) and 6482 (re-enlisted when 18). Served in South Africa 1900-1901 and Egypt 1906-1910. He was discharged in 5th October 1910. His mother was net of kin, but died 1 year earlier 20th June 1899 at 3 Wallace Green Berwick-upon-Tweed.
I can find no record of him after 1910. Have searched death, marriage, census. Admittedly there are a lot of Edward Hogg's around. Anyone got any other ideas?
Thanks Barbara

Hi
Have you got the correct person as there's a probate record for an Edward Tindale Fardinand Harbottle Hogg, 39 St Pauls Road, Middlesbrough, 21 July 1903. Death listed as 8 July 1903. A painter.

This is getting very odd - how many were there?
Baptism Hexham 9 Nov 1842 (and GRO Reg Dec )
Baptism Berwick 14 Nov 1880 (and GRo Reg Dec )
Baptism Berwick 8 July 1883 (and GRO Reg Jun)
Death Berwick Mar q, 1856 (and GRO Reg Mar)
Need to check the censuses for the 2 Berwick births 1880 and 1883 :-\

Here are the two younger ones in 1891:
Woolmarket, Berwick
RG12/4268/6/5
Elizabeth Hogg, widow, 43, laundress, b. Berwick
Elizabeth, d, 15 general domestic servant, b. do
Edward, s, 10, b. do
Rentors, Lowhaughs, Berwick
RG12/4267/24/4
William Hogg, 38, ag lab, b. Berwick
Helen, w, 28, b. do
Edward, s, 7. b. lowhaughs
and 4 other siblings
I think that the first one is the one Barbara is looking for.
I've checked emigration but no obvious hit and nothing showing in the CWGC site. Could he have returned to South Africa :-\

Hi Gadget - yes there are lots of them! You'd think with five names they'd be easy to trace, but the problem is they keep not using them all. The one in Sth Shields/Middlesbrough is a cousin - have all his details thanks. The 1891 census woolmarket Berwick is the right one. The Lowhaughs is also his cousin (dont have his death details either). There were just too many Edward Hoggs to keep buying the death certificates until I got the right one. :( The 1856 Berwick death is the original Edward TFH Hogg. He had 8 children (including an Edward TFH) and at least 3 of them also had a son named Edward with some or all of the 3 names afterwards. ??? Makes for interesting research. I though this one being KOSB would be easier, but possibly not. Thanks for the help :). Cheers Barbara

Did you try the 1911 Scotland Census? There are 3 Edward Hoggs listed with age of 31.
What an intriguing name he had.

I had a look but none of them seemed to be right. No obvious deaths there either :(

Thanks Gadget and nickiejo. Yes I have looked in all the normal places that I can using internet (I am in Australia). Thought there may be another source known to locals that I could try, but if not it will just remain a mystery. ??? Thanks for the help
