Title: Tarleton Street and King Street, Liverpool
Post by: nickiejo on Wednesday 03 September 14 14:32 BST (UK)
I am trying to locate the premises where Robert Naylor Winter might have been licensed victualler in around 1895 to 1898.  On his daughter Ruby's baptism at St Peter's, Liverpool on 10 March 1895 his address was recorded as Tarleton Street, Liverpool.  I have not seen her baptism record yet so do not know the occupation recorded for the father.  But in 1897 on another child's baptism the address given was 14 King Street, Liverpool and his occupation licensed victualler.   A long shot, but wondered if 14 King Street might have been a pub?

I have a book listing the 1700-odd pubs in the Liverpool Licensing district in 1909 (but nothing earlier).  There were three premises listed in King Street, Garston, but no. 14 is not one of them.  They are about 6 miles from the city centre.  There was another King Street, off South Castle Street in the city commercial centre, but no pubs are listed for it.
Tarleton Street had four pubs listed.
At what church was the 1897 baptism?
Someone with a local directory might have more to offer.
It is possible that your man did not live on the premises he ran - unusual but possible.

Thank you Ainslie.  The 1897 baptism was at St George's church, abode 14 King Street.  By 1899 the family were in Poulton-cum-Seacombe and shortly afterwards on the Isle of Man - and from then on  back and forth to Manchester.  I have evidence that his occupation in 1893 (and for several years prior) was a commercial traveller.  When the family were in Manchester 1904 onwards they were running a pub.

The central King Street was close to St George's church.  That area has all been redeveloped, mostly by the newish Liverpool One shopping complex.  There could have been pubs in King Street earlier, but I have no details.

Thank you to Blue and Shaun - it is good to have the occupation from Ruby's baptism, thank you.  Yes I had spotted that birth announcement in the paper and wondered where Cottage Hotel was.  They were quite keen on putting in birth announcements and the other Liverpool birth got one too I remember -  in the Eureka Hotel, Tarleton Street.  It's not been easy as they moved around so much but they are a very colourful family and I wanted to try and fill in as much background as I could.  Thanks again.

Found The Eureka public house - Tarleton Street (west side, close to Leigh Street) at No 26. Mrs Maria Gregory.  That's in Kelly's 1894 Liverpool.  So possibility the Winters were running it in 1895.

I just have to add to this thread.

At the moment (September 2021) I am investigating a Clive Thelwall, born England, died New Zealand.
He married Ruby Mignon Winter in Manchester in 1918 and took her back to New Zealand.
I really must stop being surprised at how the "Six Steps of Connection" keep cropping up in my research.

Jean,
Small world. I have an old chest of drawers at home belonging to Ruby's sister Doris !
Two Thelwall brothers married two Winter sisters.
