Hi
Swindon Library regularly post answers for GWR queries on Brit***-Gene****y.c** and would possibly respond to emails as well.
also there are a number of UK, Railway employment records, 1833-1963: Which are available online from the National Archives via Anc****y.c*.**

Some GWR Staff Records are available on Ancestry.
William Henry Thomas Prout, born 11th August 1900, entered service 20th September 1915
A cleaner at Exeter.
Went to Cardiff as Fireman, 10th December 1917.

Thank you both for your replies . I have Ancestry but my subs do not let me access GWR records. Is that all it says about William ? There is a newspaper article by GWR saying they have commended him and will enter it on his records . { Western Morning News 13th Nov 1924 } .I had wondered what deed he had done for such a commendation .

That's all it says!
The Staff records are simply the Staff Books:
Names, type of job, DoB, Date entered service, Rates of Pay - just as I mentioned.
You haven't updated your profile, so it's impossible to know where in the world you are, and what Ancestry subscription you may have?
But, if you go to Search, and Card Catalogue; enter Railway as a search term - UK Railway Employment records come up as the first item?
Then entering William Henry Thomas Prout will bring up those 2 entries I mentioned.
You may need to contact Swindon Library, or get someone to search the relevant records at TNA.

Thank you , I will contact the TNA in the hope of seeing more .

The TNA website has lists of researchers - and their specialities.
Some 10 or 15 years ago, I used one of these to lookup records for my great-grandfather.
Can't remember who I used - but because he was a Railway expert, he was very quick and not too expensive!
I should add that G-Grandfather was a stationmaster on the Somerset & Dorset, and trained on railways in Essex.
So nothing on Ancestry for me!
-
That sounds good thank you , I will have a look .

Hello ,I have been in touch with TNA and they tell me Ancestry has made an error and my relatives full records can be seen by entering Henry Thomas Prout William , William being the surname . I would appreciate if someone could look for me please . They told me to inform Ancestry of this error as well .
Thanks

Lots of dates, rates of pay, and codes - so this is a precis:
20 Sep 1915 Engine Cleaner
7 Dec 1917 Fireman
28 June 1937 Driver
Last entry 3 Sep 1951
20 Sep 1915 Exeter
7 Dec 1917 Cardiff
14 Aug 1920 Exeter (Own Request)
28 Jun 1937 Exeter (Temporary <something?>
27 Sep 1937 Abercynon
17 Feb 1941 Exeter. Own Request
13 Aug 1924 Commended
Keeping a sharp look out & promptly signalling to driver to stop train, thereby avoiding serious injury to a woman who had fallen on to line.
It really would be worthwhile either getting a month's subscription to Ancestry, and looking yourself! You could then take a copy of the page.
Alternatively, try your local library - they may have Ancestry access?
-
Thank you very much for that . I do have an Ancestry Subs but when I try to look they tell me to upgrade to Premium or Worldwide .
Thanks
Alan

???
I only have a UK sub, and it's fine for me?
I had assumed you were in the UK, but you haven't updated your profile to say which country you reside in?
-
Yes I live in the UK . I have Essentials Subs . I looked at upgrade to World subs but it will cost me an extra £100 , a bit much at the moment .

Hi, I have just had a quick look and there is a splendid record of him including his eyesight, illnesses and postings. It states on 13/8/1924 at Ide (I think) he was commended for keeping a 'sharp lookout' and signalled to warn the driver as a woman had fallen on to the line and in doing so saved her.
I have to go out and may be offline for a while but if you want to know more of his dates of service etc let me know..it's all handwritten and I would not say I'm and expert on GWR record keeping etc but will try my best.
Regards
Pat

When the request to upgrade appears close it and carry on
-
Hello Pat , thank you , sounds fascinating . I have his mantel clock for 25yrs service with GWR . I guess my Essentials Subs do not allow me to open , I did try and it said upgrade .
